This estate was originally called 'Chateau Coutenceau' but the name was changed in 1845 partly in honour of Londoner owner Bruno Daves Belgravia home and partly to reflect the terroir as 'belle grave' roughly translates as 'beautiful gravel' In 1855 it became a fifth growth in the great classification. In 1979 the Dourthe negociant house leased the estate and invested heavily bringing in Michel Rolland as consultant. There are now a total of 55 hectares under vine.In 1987 a second wine called 'Diane de Belgrave' was introduced that name being a reference to the fact that the chateau was a hunting lodge during the reign of Louis XV and Diane is the goddess of hunting

The wine spent 15 months in oak barrels 50% of which were new.I started my bottle last night with my supper of baked chicken breast. There is some black... Read More

  • Chateau Belgrave 2013

The 2013 Chateau Belgrave (Cinquieme Cru of 1855) opens on the nose with some blueberry, smoky oak and a hint of more dark fruit such as blackberry. Entry is surprisingly light (and lean), bracing and acidic - without heady tannin but some blackberry fruit poking through. Depth and core is absent here, but a light tasty early drinker is found ... • Diane de Belgrave 2009

This second wine of Chateau Belgrave (5th Growth, Haut-Medoc, adjacent to St-Julien) is supple, somewhat fat and sweetish with thick cassis and blackberry flavours. The fruit-forward nose and taste is typical of the '09 vintage and a pleasant surprise in a second wine. Fairly balanced, but not complex. Reasonable value. Drink now through the ... Read More

  • If I were anywhere near New York on the 29th I'd be going to this event. Great wine, interesting winemakers, and lots of old posters, art nouveau or otherwise. Why is it I'd rather have one of them on my wall then a Flash banner ad from the Web?Price seems like more than a bargain, and the money goes to charity, too....   ... Here's your chance ...
