The vineyard covers 30 hectares, or 75 acres, split between red and white vines - on clay, gravel and limestone soils. We grow mostly merlot with some cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc grapes for our ‘Appellation Contrôlée’ Premières Côtes de Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur red wines, and our Bordeaux Blancs are made from sauvignon blanc and sémillon. Each vine is tended by hand around eight times a year, from the winter pruning onwards, and passed by tractor over 20 times a season: trimming, spraying, mowing, turning the soil, and so on. We employ a system of ‘lutte raisonée’, or reasoned viticulture, whereby we only spray when we have to, or rather, panic when we have to. After buying the estate in 1999, it became clear - and this came as a bit of a surprise - that much of the vineyard needed updating, so we ripped out half the vines and replanted.
