Charles Krug Winery

Charles Krug was an imprisoned revolutionary, an entrepreneur, and a wine visionary. Peter Mondavi and family are entrepreneurs and wine innovators, but never imprisoned revolutionaries (that we know of!). Together, they trace the entire timeline for wine in Napa Valley. Charles Krug Winery in St. Helena, Napa Valley, was founded by a 24-year-old revolutionary who was part of a coup to overthrow the German Parliament. He was thrown into prison, to be freed only in a second revolution attempt nine months later. Around him, some of Europe’s greatest cities--Prague, Paris and Berlin—were in political and financial turmoil. Meanwhile, from the California Gold Rush came stories of riches and glory and the promise of unimaginable wealth. It didn’t take Krug long to jump on a ship to the New World. Charles was educated, opinionated and entrepreneurial, founding Napa Valley’s first winery in 1881. He was the first major vintner to apply scientific methods and European techniques to winemaking here. He also brought varietal diversity to Napa Valley, too, rejecting the prevalent Mission grape in favor of European varieties. Krug not only set the stage, he built the stage for the Napa Valley wine Read more »

  • Charles Krug Winery Peter Mondavi Family Merlot Napa Valley 2008

Chocolate, vanilla and shaved cedar greet the nose along with some red berry fruit and a hint of camphor. Broad in the mouth and fairly fresh, with a nice layered entry that shows off an earthy undertone, hints of leather and wood spice, and an accent of vanilla over a base of dark red berry fruit. There's even a touch of strawberry on the back ... Read More

  • Charles Krug Winery Peter Mondavi Family Merlot Napa Valley 2009

Lots of sweet cocoa and carob greet the nose along with a crisp arugula edge to the dark, slightly dried plum and boysenberry fruit. Has some vanilla, cinnamon and tobacco top notes. This has lovely focus as it enters the mouth, with youthfully dry tannins adding cut to the palate. The fruit is bright and fairly complex while not being sweet, wi... Read More

  • Charles Krug Cabernet Sauvignon Yountville Napa Valley 2009

This wine is very deeply colored, almost ink like in appearance, with deep purple to ruby along the edges. The nose has lovely fruit aromas of black cherry and ripe plum, along with cocoa, fresh herbs and almost a raisin smell. For taste, it's delightfully fruit forward, with flavors of currant and raspberry at the outset, quickly transitionin... Read More

  • As a Californian, I have felt the loss of such old names as Almaden, Christian Brothers and Inglenook.  (OK, I guess Almaden still exists as a mocking shell of its former being.  OK, I know it never was great, but their bottles did have corks.  Maybe I am the only person who feels a sense of loss of Almaden.)  Another of the old abused names is ... • People are not going to like what I have to say here, but that is okay, this is not a popularity contest. I do not write about wine to gather as many friends or followers as possible. I write about wine because I love wine and while I know my palate sometimes strays outside of the mainstream, so be it. I know many other people share my tastes or... Read More
