The Champagne region is an ancient French province, located approximately 150km northeast of Paris. The grape growing region, which has a specifically chalky geology, is officially delimited by French law: it covers 34,000 hectares (84,000 acres), of which 30,000 (74,000) are actually used for grapevine. More than 300 villages have their particular champagne wines, each having its own characteristics. Outside of the region, you can not make authentic champagne. The soil and the climate give the guaranteed vintage Champagne grapes a unique and unmatched taste. – Description from Kursulla
