Cayuse is a winery located in Walla Walla, Washington. It was founded in the late 1990s by winemaker Christophe Baron, son of Champagne producers for Baron Albert. On a visit to the area in 1996, he stumbled upon an unsullied bit of rocky soil on the Oregon side of the Washington/Oregon border. He suspected this territory had vast similarities in terroir and climate with some of the most prestigious French regions in the Rhone valley and Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Ignoring naysayers, he acted on his intuition and decided to establish vineyards. These types of conditions force vines to dig deep for moisture, resulting in concentrated, structured fruit. He named the wine for the Cayuse, a Native American tribe, themselves named after the French word “cailloux” (“rocks”). The vineyards are mostly planted with Syrah, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Merlot, Mourvedre, Roussane, Tempranillo and Viognier. Shortly after Baron produced his first vintage, Read more »

  • Dmucker - Cayuse makes a few bottlings. That's an interesting one because I'm not sure where I'd put them. but they may fit in. Copain isn't quite in that group, but I do like their wines - recently went through a case because they have big bottoms and I was running out of boxes.I'm no expert, but after 15 wines from different vineyards, I think... • I love N. Rhone Syrah.  It's my favorite red wine in France.  But the acreage of the region is so small and the area that provide its best wines even smaller, that prices have hit the roof.  Sure, there are a few St. Josephs and Crozes-Hermitages that come in around $25, but those are either made for earlier drinking and a lot less thrilling wit... • Sean Sullivan recently published and updated a list of his top 100 or so wines of 2012, with predictable results. Cayuse, Quilceda Creek, Leonetti all occupy the top 3 spots, followed by a few mid tier standards like Betz, Reynvaan, Maison Bleue, Grammercy. Well, I should say I'm just starting to get to know these names and also starting to buy ... • I get so caught up in work that I often neglect to check in here. I'm apologizing about that!  I'm back afer a few weeks in New Zealand, which sucks up all my time not only during the trip but for the weeks prior and, as it looks, most of the week after my return. Before you ask, new Zealand was great. • Had one of those once in a lifetime days betting the ponies today.  With the winnings, i'm probably going to be budgeting up to $1500.00 on some more expensive wines I haven't been able to afford in the $80-$200 range.  Any suggestions?  I favor a right-bank bordeaux style for reds but also enjoy a medium bodied cabernet style, along with rhone ...
