Cayuse is a winery located in Walla Walla, Washington. It was founded in the late 1990s by winemaker Christophe Baron, son of Champagne producers for Baron Albert. On a visit to the area in 1996, he stumbled upon an unsullied bit of rocky soil on the Oregon side of the Washington/Oregon border. He suspected this territory had vast similarities in terroir and climate with some of the most prestigious French regions in the Rhone valley and Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Ignoring naysayers, he acted on his intuition and decided to establish vineyards. These types of conditions force vines to dig deep for moisture, resulting in concentrated, structured fruit. He named the wine for the Cayuse, a Native American tribe, themselves named after the French word “cailloux” (“rocks”). This was a wonderfully complex wine, with core of blue and blackberries, good mix of spices, overtones of meatiness, leather adn cigar box. Long, spicy finish and silky tannins. This wine still has several good years left.
