Caymus Vineyards was founded in 1972 by Charles F. (Charlie) Wagner, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner and their son Charles J. (Chuck) Wagner on the family's Rutherford property. The Wagners produced their first Cabernet Sauvignon from the 1972 vintage. Their first Special Selection - from outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon lots  - was made from the 1975 vintage. Caymus has made Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon every year since its founding, and now focuses entirely on this variety.

  • Caymus Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection 2009

Sweet and gingery on the nose with a classic modern Napa Cabernet profile that shows plenty of candied black cherry fruit and lots of coffee-toned oak. Smells a bit spoofy. Smooth, polished and extracted in the mouth with lots of black fruit framed by notes of chocolate, licorice, and toast. Fine grained tannins nicely match the density of fruit... Read More

  • Caymus Conundrum California 2010

Sweet lychee and honey with apricot on the nose, spicy floral base notes with white flowers. A touch round on entry with noticeable viscosity, this shows off honey-tinged melon, apricot and light mineral flavors with some polyphenolic Viognier bitterness on the back end. Floral and polleny on the finish, which is a touch short and with a whisper... Read More

  • Elsewhere you can read about the offline I attended with OT and GdP and a bunch of winemakers, winelovers, and the like.  But on the way there, I think I solved a major problem with California wine; over conversation with GdP and an assistant winemaker from Napa, my belief was confirmed.I read in an obituary of Aldo Conterno that he had come to ... • Mer Soleil Chardonnay Silver Unoaked 2011

Deep golden color, which I wasn't expected for an unoaked chard. Nice warm, bright fruit on the nose. Nectarine, peach, some lemon and light minerality. Very nice mouthfeel and vibrant acid on the palate. Wonderful vivacity and brightness. Peach, apricot, nectarine and a nice lemon tartness. Really nice fruit unencumbered by oak. Pleasant... • The Zinner party was last night, but preparations began a week or two ago when I realized I had accumulated some Zins that needed consuming.  I had been lured by a cellar sale on BPWine that featured a ton of Turley wines from different vineyards at really attractive prices.  By the time I pulled the trigger, the best values appeared to be a 200... • Being a cab lover I am hesitant to stray from what I like. On a recent occasion I had the opportunity to try a Zinfandel and to my amazement, it had some of the same attributes of the cabernets I love so well. I perused Snooth and stopped on a particular zin from Bogle vineyards. Gregory Dal Piaz gave it a nice rating and being a member of Snoot... Read More
