When you think Cave de Tain, your mind should instantly jump to Syrah. Syrah is the only red varietal that Cave de Tain makes into wine, making it a specialist in its production. Not only that, but it is also the leading producer of “cru” wines in the Northern Rhone Valley, with about 2,500 acres of grapes planted.

Cave de Tain is a collective of about 330 growers located in Rhone Valley, France. Louis Gambert de Loche founded Cave de Tain in 1933 and became its first president. The wines produced as a part of the Cave de Tain l’Hermitage are sourced across many terroirs and domaines, including Crozes Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas, Saint Peray, Saint Joseph, and Vin de Pays. Not only does it encompass wine produced across these regions, but it produces almost half of the wine grown in the Crozes Hermitage.

  • Fox asked me the other day if I was going to start a thread on this years growing season. I've been real busy with other things and haven't had much time to focus on the specifics of the 2013 season. But, things are getting off to an early start due to unusually warm Spring weather and a mild Winter where the Sierra snowpack is only 17% of norma... Read More

  • Cave de Tain Marsanne 2011

    Snoothrank:

Nice, light marsanne, good for a summer deck mid-week sipper. Nothing over the top, slight touch of dried apricot, subtle butterscotch, light on the acidity and a short finish. Not much going on here but not unpleasant either. Read More

  • Cave de Tain Syrah Esprit de Granit Saint Joseph 2010

    Snoothrank:

A bit stemmy on the nose with attractive green olive, caper and black pepper aromas over somewhat intrusive new oak. This shows noticeable dry extract in the mouth with a bit of a pasty feel, even though the wine manages to remain fairly fresh feeling. The flavors are decidedly in the red fruit end of the spectrum with a nice herbal edge and a ... Read More

  • Cave de Tain Syrah 2009

Dry and very "woody", but also silky smooth and quite pleasant. Paired this with a beef roast and roasted potatoes, and it was a wonderful and comforting meal on a cold winter night. Read More
