Rasteau covers an area of 1880 hectares with 1240 devoted to the vine. It has a Mediterranean climate and the exposure of the vineyards is excellent: 70% of them are on south-facing hillsides (at 200-400 metres) swept by the Mistral; the soils are different types of clayey limestone, some of them covered with smooth stones. The diversity of soils and grape varieties explains why Rasteau wines have such complexity in their aromas and flavours and are so potent, fine and elegant. The average age of the vines is 40, though some plots are over 80 years old: grapes from the old vines are used for Rasteau Vin Doux Naturel and and Côtes du Rhône Villages. – Description from iskicm

  • For March, my tasting group explored the length of the Rhône valley.  Probably for consistency of quality, one of our best tastings to date with just about all o the wines showing well and being universally liked by all.  I was lucky to find/have access to some older vintages from estate sales and store cellars, so it made for a fun night.  Here... • Côtes du Rhône-Villages Rasteau Cave de Rasteau Dame Victoria 2010

    Snoothrank:

This mouth-puckering concoction has a deep cherry robe and a mute nose of currants with a hint of blueberry. There is some stemminess on the bouquet as well - possibly due to the Mourvedre component. The wine is more structured, less juicy and less unctious than more Grenache-dominated Rasteau, but the mouth-feel suggests aging to 2017 or 2018.... Read More

this wine showed typical blackberry fruit with some gamy aromas along with violet undertones. on the palate, the black fruit was dense with an almost sweet jamminess to it.there was some spice, vanilla and a gamy leathery tone in the background. Read More

For the price, and the fact that I was having dinner at home alone...I thoroughly enjoyed my chilled glass of this wine. It was light and refreshing and paired well with a salmon burger with spinach and a crumble of feta. If I were to have a dinner party, I would plan on serving this wine as an option. Read More

  • Cave de Rasteau Côtes du Rhône-Villages Rasteau Tradition 2007

    Snoothrank:

This was a very nice wine for $12.95. This is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. The color is more purple than red. The aroma is a quite fragrant- ripe cherry followed by earthy notes. This is a well-balanced, medium-bodied wine. The flavors are dominated by dark ripe cherry. There is a touch of sweetness and a smooth mouth feel. Read More
