HISTORY On the periphery of the Castiglione Falletto township, centre of the Barolo area, crowning the Bricco Boschis hill, one comes upon the Tenuta Vitivinicola Cavallotto (the Cavallotto Vineyards) of 25 hectares of which 23 spread of vineyards. Cavallotto Estate has been in the family for five generations and in 1948, the brothers Olivio and Gildo, who were continuing the work of their grandfather Giacomo, their father Giuseppe and their uncle Marcello, became the first people of the area to dedicate themselves to the production and trading of wines. These wines were obtained solely from the grapes of their own vineyards. Olivio's offspring, Laura, Giuseppe, and Alfio continue to produce wine which is made exclusively from the estate's grapes and from the transformation of these they obtain DOC and DOCG: Barolo, Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Alba, Nebbiolo Langhe, Freisa Langhe, Grignolino Piedmonte, Pinot Langhe, Chardonnay Langhe. • I've seen the Cavallotto label over the years appearing plenty on-line, like on my facebook feed, but I've never thought to give the wines any attention myself until recently. • JD, my quick take on Cavallotto:  They use rotovinifiers, but are otherwise very traditional.  We walked through Bricco Boschis a lot because our accommodations were right next door.  (The place we stayed is where I thought they should bring in an outside winemaker, if I recall correctly:  It's called Tenuta Montanello and has good land, borderi... From the article The Barolo Wine Wars Have Begun

  • I had a couple Cavallotto Barolos that certainly smelled, umm, poopy upon opening.  It blew off after a while, but it was unmistakable.  I blame the rotos. Strangely, those wines, in spite of the odor and the use of rotos, screamed terroir.  They were both clearly nebbiolo, but they screamed of their sites.  After a week of drinking wines from m... I went to Piedmont, Cavallotto was the one place we went to that openly used rotovinifiers.  I could absolutely taste the terroir in the wines--each block (never mind vineyards, because most of their holdings are in Bricco Boschis) had its own profile.  But the inf...
