Just as in the 12th Century, the village itself still plays an essential role in our wine and oil production. The interiors of its ancient houses, churches, underground passages and deconsecrated churches have been discreetly converted into wine cellars, bottling plants and olive presses up to the ceiling in the latest equipment and all connected by an amazing underground "wineduct." Thus Volpaia is not just another magnificent tourist attraction, but a thriving hive of activity whose inhabitants are all directly or indirectly involved in the winery. Volpaia is committed to Organic farming and is certified organic for all its wines. But the environmetal project of Volpaia is much wider: - the genetical differences of all its indigenous Sangiovese clones are preserved into a special collection, a selected parcel were 22 different clones are grown on three different rootstock - all the winery i located within the ancient buildings of the village preserving the integrity of the architectural Read more »

  • Castello di Volpaia Sangiovese Blend Chianti Classico 2006

Very light nose with hints of cherry. In the mouth this wine is either still too young & closed or one that just doesn't have much fruit to offer, but 2006 leads me to believe the latter. The wine left me wanting and searching for more. Read More

  • Well this was an unusual evening, a Sangiovese tasting with most of the wines from California! As unusual as it may have been the results speak for themselves. Plenty of impressive wines and three standouts. I'll go into more detail in the corresponding blog post and well follow this set of wines up with more Sangiovese next week but suffice it ... • Castello di Volpaia Sangiovese Blend Chianti Classico 2006

A touch meaty and first then turning very floral with a touch of wood spice, quite spicy fruit, black cherry, sweet almost red-hot cinnamon (-), very floral. Medium light on entry with nice acids and soft tannins. There is good depth of flavor with twisty herbal and mineral veins that offset the sour cherry/ red currant fruits. A classic auste... • Castello di Volpaia Sangiovese Blend Chianti Classico 2006

A bit estery but quite intense and fruity with wild strawberry tones on the nose with hints of leather and forest floor. With air and adds a nice mineral/rain water note and a hint of flowers. Very light fresh and pure with marginal tannins and juicy acids that are a bit hard on their own. Finishes with a touch of herb and sand. Correct and simp... Read More

  • Sangiovese is one of my favorite grapes. A very food friendly profile that combines high acid, small but grippy tannins and a touch of astringency makes for wine that are perfect for pairing at the table. Brunello, Chianti, Vino Nobile, Morellino, ton's of Rossos and varietal wines from the west coast will make this a great GTi.I'll kick off the... Read More

  • Castello di Volpaia Sangiovese Blend Vino da Tavola Coltassala 2005

Produced from 95% Sangiovese and 5% mammolo. In contrast to the open and giving 2004 CCR this bottle opens very slowly with intriguing notes of vanilla tinged jammy blackberry fruit that is framed with gentle toast notes and a very fine mineral vein that grows in intensity. After about an hour this really blossoms with fine perfumed scents of vi... Read More

  • Volpaia Chianti Riserva 2004

100% Sangiovese While needing a bit of time to get going this has classic notes of tobacco, leather and limestone on the nose. There is a nuance of vanilla and lovely grace notes of smoke and slightly herbaceous/herbal sod. This offers up a wonderfully feminine and firmly mid-bodied feel with fine acidity and rich flavors of leather, red currant... Read More
