Italy View map

Fonterutoli is located 5 km south of Castellina in Chianti (Siena), on the hills facing the Val d'Elsa, in the heart of the Chianti Classico. Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, it still retains its original form, that of a tranquil country village: a cluster of houses, the church of San Miniato and the villa, built at the end of the 1500s where the medieval castle once stood. On the main square next to the ancient church is the family villa, surrounded by the charming village apartments and suites managed as luxury b&b that can be rented individually or as a single unit. – Description from JelaDragoljevic

  • Castello di Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2010

    Snoothrank:

Deep, earthy, herbal and slightly medicinal aromas of spicy fruit dominate the nose with hints of tobacco and briar adding great complexity and detail with a minty accent emerging with air. On the palate this is moderately rich, a little soft perhaps, but transparent with great purity to the fruit which is fairly ripe with blue and blackberry ... Read More

  • Another in my series of reports focusing on the wines I was able to sample at the prowein event held in March of this year in Dusseldorf, Germany. Today we’re talking about Chianti Classico, soon to be followed by thoughts on a line-up of the new Gran Selezione wines. I’m not sure we need yet another level for Chianti, but that too shall wait fo... Read More

  • Fonterutoli Chianti Classico 2012

    Snoothrank:

90% Sangiovese, 10% a blend of malvasia Nera, Colorino and Merlot Sweetly oaked and vanila influenced on the nose, this show some attractive black cherry and blackcurrant fruit aromas. A bit slick in the mouth in a rich but simple style that is attractively fresh with a nice mineral edge that helps to add a bit of cut to the rather chunky fruit.... Read More

  • Fonterutoli Badiola Mazzei 2010

    Snoothrank:

Big cherry nose, maybe some mint. Very nice initial mouth feel, then you notice drying tannins around the edge. You can taste some cherry, but not like what I was expecting from the nose. There is also a hint of mintiness without any sweetness. Very smooth finish. A pretty darned good wine--especially for the price. US$9.99 at Costco Read More
