There were vineyards in Roero in the Roman era. The ancients could not have failed to notice the good conditions for the ripening of grapes in this area: calcareous soils, higher temperatures, and very little rain. After the Middle Ages, the Nebiollo produced here as a sweet wine reached the table of the Dukes of Savoy The layers of marl and sand which make up the middle and upper strata of these hills have long been deemed the ideal soil for Nebbiolo and Barbera vines. However; while Nebbiolo and Barbera are common throughout Northem Italy Arneis is the ambassador for Roero around the world. Its name is thought to derive from Bric Renesio (Reneysium, as appears in a will dated 1478), a hill which stands just behind Canale: a theory bome out by a document dated 1528, which lists a “vinea muschatelli et renexij” among the properties of the Roero family of Monticello. – Description from Vinterest
