Viña Carmen was founded in 1850 by Christian Lanz, who named the winery in honour to his beloved wife Carmen. More than a century later, in 1987, the Claro Group acquired the brand to take it into a new direction. In 1992 a new winery was built and new vineyards were planted, to produce the best quality wines from Chile, and export them worldwide. Carmen has been recognised for its quality and for being a pioneer in the Chilean wine industry. As an example, the Carmenére grape was discovered amongst Carmen vineyards. Additionally the winery has been the leader producer of wines from organically grown grapes through its Nativa brand. Today, Viña Carmen is one of the most important Chilean wineries in the premium wine segment. It exports to more than 50 countries, which represents 94% of the total production. – Description from iskicm

The grape returned from assumed extinction in 1994 – that’s a fairly recent date, especially in wine years. For decades it was believed that Carmenere from Chile was a unique strain of Merlot. Once its true identity was revealed by DNA testing the g... Read More

Carmen 2011 Merlot Gran Reserva, Maipo Alta $4.99 pre-sale price, bought during the 20% sale at Grocery Outlet. This is a very nice Merlot for the price paid. Im generally not a Merlot fan, but Ive got no issues with this one, except that its not a big blockbuster and its not going to be an ager, as it has no tannins to speak of. A very smooth, e... • OK, my OCD is kicking in.Al, did the Somm say that it contained ... St. ... St. Macaire, Gros Verdot and Carmenère. If the blend includes any other grape variety, it is, by definition, not a Meritage. Also, to qualify as a Meritage, no single grape variety can make up more than 90% of the blend.Syrah is not a "Bordeaux grape."  If a blend cont... Read More
