Carmel Winery is the historic winery of Israel. It was founded in 1882 by Baron Edmond de Rothschild, owner of Château Lafite in Bordeaux. Carmel owns the two largest wineries in Israel, at Rishon Le Zion, south of Tel Aviv and at Zichron Ya’acov, south of Haifa. Each has deep underground cellars built by Rothschild in the 19th century. Carmel Winery has 1,400 hectares (3,472 acres) of vineyards, which cover the land of Israel from the Upper Galilee in the north, to the Negev in the south. Carmel’s winemakers can therefore choose from vineyards with different terroirs from all the wine regions in Israel. Carmel has a particularly strong vineyard presence in the cooler climate Upper Galilee, from where many of the leading wines are sourced. Carmel produces 15 million bottles a year, including wines of every style and at every price point. These range from Carmel Limited Edition, the flagship of the winery, to Selected, Israel's largest selling brand.

  • Sean Sullivan recently published and updated a list of his top 100 or so wines of 2012, with predictable results. Cayuse, Quilceda Creek, Leonetti all occupy the top 3 spots, followed by a few mid tier standards like Betz, Reynvaan, Maison Bleue, Grammercy. Well, I should say I'm just starting to get to know these names and also starting to buy ... A surprisingly good wine. I'm not a huge Pinot fan, most taste to light for me, but this had a good balance and an affordable price. 88 points. Read More

  • Carmel Road Pinot Noir Arroyo Seco 2011

Rather floral on the nose and quite perfumed. Gentle leesy edges add nuance to the core of peach and almond toned fruit that has a distinctive cherry note to it. Unusual but attractive on the nose. Medium plus-bodied in the mouth with an early rush of lemon candy that settles into a baked apple and lemon groove on the mid-palate. This has a gent... Read More

  • People are not going to like what I have to say here, but that is okay, this is not a popularity contest. I do not write about wine to gather as many friends or followers as possible. I write about wine because I love wine and while I know my palate sometimes strays outside of the mainstream, so be it. I know many other people share my tastes or... Read More

  • Bernardus Winery Red Bordeaux Blend Carmel Valley Marinus 2009

This is intensely aromatic with notes of pencil shavings, dried rosemary and pressed flowers all swirling around a core of black currant, prune and juniper. Big and smooth in the mouth, it is packed with rosemary-tinged black currant, black plum skin and spicy berry fruit. This is smooth and approachable though it has an innate firmness. On the ... • Bernardus Winery Red Bordeaux Blend Carmel Valley Marinus 2007

Rich blackberry and creme de cassis liquer on the nose. On the palate, blackberry, cassis, cedar. RIch, concentrated and bold. Tons of ripe blackberry fruit on this wine! Tasty and nice.2/4/12 Read More

  • Carmel Road Pinot Noir 2009

This was a nicely balanced Pinot with decent dark red fruit, leather and spices. Soft drinking and a little bit bolder than some of the other Pinots out there. Would be nice with dinner but no food necessary with this one. Read More

  • Carmel Road Pinot Noir Arroyo Seco 2011

This smells exotically fruity with lots of pineapple, kiwi and yellow citrus fruit notes all buttressed with light oak spice and a streak of vanilla. Rich and very front-loaded, this enters the mouth like gangbusters but begins to fade rather quickly. Whats here is very attractive- pineapple, lime and very subtle oak influence yielding a rather ... Read More
