Carmel Winery is the historic winery of Israel. It was founded in 1882 by Baron Edmond de Rothschild, owner of Château Lafite in Bordeaux. Carmel owns the two largest wineries in Israel, at Rishon Le Zion, south of Tel Aviv and at Zichron Ya’acov, south of Haifa. Each has deep underground cellars built by Rothschild in the 19th century. Carmel Winery has 1,400 hectares (3,472 acres) of vineyards, which cover the land of Israel from the Upper Galilee in the north, to the Negev in the south. Carmel’s winemakers can therefore choose from vineyards with different terroirs from all the wine regions in Israel. Carmel has a particularly strong vineyard presence in the cooler climate Upper Galilee, from where many of the leading wines are sourced. Carmel produces 15 million bottles a year, including wines of every style and at every price point. These range from Carmel Limited Edition, the flagship of the winery, to Selected, Israel's largest selling brand.

  • It’s the holiday season and everyone is recommending Pinot Noir again. What is it with folks, do they just like to take the path of least resistance? Will there come a day when Pinot is not the end all of holiday wine recommendations? Probably not. Lambrusco and Blaufrankisch have a whole set of issues that will prevent them from ever garnering ... Read More

  • Carmel Road Monterey Pinot Noir 2010

    Snoothrank:

This smells a touch heavy with plums and forest floor aromas on the nose with a light dandelion green top note. A bit chunky in the mouth, this also seems a bit soft, which may make it appear sweeter than it is. The flavors of black cherry add complicating notes of black olive and toasted nuts on the mid-palate and then a hint of toasted marshma... Read More

  • Below you will find my general opinions on SCM wineries I have visited recently.  I have rated most wines I have tasted in "my wines" so you can look up specific wines by winery.   But what I really want to know is where I have missed.  I am going this weekend and want to hit Burrell school for sure...   I am afraid of Rhys and Ridge because of ... • Sean Sullivan recently published and updated a list of his top 100 or so wines of 2012, with predictable results. Cayuse, Quilceda Creek, Leonetti all occupy the top 3 spots, followed by a few mid tier standards like Betz, Reynvaan, Maison Bleue, Grammercy. Well, I should say I'm just starting to get to know these names and also starting to buy ...
