Carmel Winery is the historic winery of Israel. It was founded in 1882 by Baron Edmond de Rothschild, owner of Château Lafite in Bordeaux. Carmel owns the two largest wineries in Israel, at Rishon Le Zion, south of Tel Aviv and at Zichron Ya’acov, south of Haifa. Each has deep underground cellars built by Rothschild in the 19th century. Carmel Winery has 1,400 hectares (3,472 acres) of vineyards, which cover the land of Israel from the Upper Galilee in the north, to the Negev in the south. Carmel’s winemakers can therefore choose from vineyards with different terroirs from all the wine regions in Israel. Carmel has a particularly strong vineyard presence in the cooler climate Upper Galilee, from where many of the leading wines are sourced. Carmel produces 15 million bottles a year, including wines of every style and at every price point. These range from Carmel Limited Edition, the flagship of the winery, to Selected, Israel's largest selling brand.

  • I may be the only one harping on the Italian Agricultural Ministry's decision to allow wines graded DOC to be "bottled" in the fairly ubiquitous bag-in-a-box container but I think it will have a significant impact on the way the Italian's present and sell their wines. The first notion that needs to be dispelled is that the DOC wines in question w... • Hands up if you've had a wine from Monterey.Of the 850 wines that I've rated on Snooth, I've had around 15 from there. Pretty poor considering the size of the region and the quality of wines made there: 40,000 acres of grapes farmed, across 9 AVA'a along an 85 mile long valley with over 80 wineries calling the county home.Monterey was originally... 30,000 cases made. Estate grown coming from 4 vineyards east of highway 101Opens with a touch of alcohol on the nose, followed by lots of leather and cherry and a surprising amount of minerality. Its very Burgundian in style throughout. In the mouth this wine has notes of cherry and a hint of spice and lots of nice tannins on the finish, with a ... Read More
