In the southern hemisphere the constellation Argo Navis is separated into three star clusters: Vela (The Sails), Puppis (The Stern), and Carina (The Keel). Named for the epic ship Argo and its crew of fifty, the constellation was placed among the stars by the Greek goddess Athena upon completion of the epic quest for the Golden Fleece. The crew, better known as the Argonauts, included Jason, Hercules, Orpheus, Castor and Pollux, triumphed through perils unseen in our modern world and became legends to innumerous generations. – Description from Kursulla

  • Uncorked the first of the Santa Barbara cache this evening - ... big ripe GSM from Carina Cellars out of Buellton, CA. I believe this is Joey Tensley's second label.  A bit on the jammy side with loads of ripe dark fruit, black cherries, slightly underipe plums that are nicely balanced with some zingy acidity. The tannins are fairly mild and th... Read More

  • Sitting at the kitchen table after a long day of travel and sorting through my ... tasting room of Tensley and Carina Cellars. Starting with Tensley, we tasted several of their single vineyard (2013) syrahs and a white Rhone blend (Grenache Blanc and Roussanne).  All were well made but nothing really rung my bell. We then walked across the roo... Read More

  • Had a great first full day here in south central California. Started off with a very good breakfast at the ForFriends B&B in Santa Ynez. Too early for any of the tasting rooms to be open so we headed down to Jalama beach for some salt air and scenery. Beautiful beach with some interesting campsites and about a half dozen surfers enjoying some mo... Read More

  • Mcginley Vineyard Syrah. Santa Barbara County From Carina Cellars Santa Barbara County Syrah Red 2007

    Snoothrank:

Surprised that this wine was as tannic as it was. Don't get me wrong, this wine is great but I think it will be better in a couple years. Full of body and well balanced. Maybe the best syrah (although my experience is about 100 wines) I've had from the Santa Barbara area. Read More
