In July 1996, Roger Louer and several of his best friends bought 11 acres of vineyards in Napa Valley, near Calistoga, along with the Blossom Creek Cottage. Originally, there was no plan to create a winery. But after a few years of selling grapes to some of Napa's top wineries, they decided to take the plunge into the winemaking world. Roger writes: "Friends from around the Country would come visit my wife and me, stay in the Blossom Creek cottage, and begin to become emotionally invested in what we were doing. So I thought, why not invite our friends to become part of the winemaking process, and make them partial owners? Sharing that process with our friends has been the key to our success. With partners all over the country, we have ambassadors in many major US markets. They help gain recognition for the brand by introducing it to their favorite retailers, restaurants, and distributors in their own backyards. This grass roots approach has been crucial to our growth, since national marketing on this level Read more »

  • We're doing a long weekend in Russian River and Napa this weekend. Flew into San Francisco yesterday with no problems. Friend picked us up at the airport, definitely beats the heck out of fighting the huge crowd at the rental car counters. Why don't they have a contiguous highway from the airport to hwy 101.So what's the first thing to do in win... Read More

  • If I was going to spend the money to go on a wine vacation I would plan on drinking something I can't already buy on the grocery store shelf. Big oaky wines are $7 a bottle. There, I said it.Depends on your budget. $25 tasting room visits can get kinda boring and repetitive. You can visit places where it's just you and the winemaker or you and t... Read More

I will be looking for unique and/or big, oaky red and white wines on a budget. We will be staying at the Old World Inn, and tentatively have vi... Read More

  • I love N. Rhone Syrah.  It's my favorite red wine in France.  But the acreage of the region is so small and the area that provide its best wines even smaller, that prices have hit the roof.  Sure, there are a few St. Josephs and Crozes-Hermitages that come in around $25, but those are either made for earlier drinking and a lot less thrilling wit... • It's not often that I have a plan. Well, a detailed plan at least.. Some sort of a plan not being a requirement for those in this business. But a detailed plan, and over-arching theme for a visit to wine country can certainly come in handy.  This month’s, or rather last month’s theme was, surprisingly enough: Zinfandel. I say surprisingly becaus... Read More

  • So I am going to Napa tomorrow for a few days.  I have some prearranged plans that cannot be changed, but have some limited  time for tasting. As "napagirl", I should already know exactly where to go.  The problem is, I get stuck into that rut of going to the ones I like, the old faves, over and over.  I would love to hear your recommendations an... • I ran up to Napa for a few days to get away and taste some wines from places I'd never been (most of them).  I went during BottleRock Napa, but alas, didn't partake in an y of those festivities.  Some great finds, so I have listed/linked any of the wines I rated over 90 points, should anyone have interest, or their own thoughts on the wines. Wit... • Like Zinfandel, Petite Sirah is primarily a California wine: the Golden State’s long, sunny growing seasons are necessary to ripen Petite Sirah’s substantial tannins and reveal its rich blackberry flavors. The wine’s structure, fruit and inky color make it an excellent blending partner for Zinfandel, red Rhône varieties and even Cabernet Sauvign... Read More
