In the 1980s Santa Barbara gathered fame as a cluster of serious vintners started producing Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that were praised for their character, depth and honesty. Among the group was Ken Brown who established his Byron Winery on the site of the original, historic Nielsen Vineyard. Brown’s innovative gravity-feed winemaking facility and intensive viticultural experiments helped revolutionize cold-climate grape growing in California. Today, Byron is focused on single vineyard and regional bottlings of Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from the best benchland sites throughout Santa Barbara County. – Description from Kursulla

  • Byron Pinot Noir Nielson Vineyard 2012

    Snoothrank:

Great density and mouth feel for a pinot at this price point. nicely balanced, and I personally prefer pinots with darker fruit characteristics, but my only criticism would be that this is somewhat one dimensional... black cherry flavor dominates. Still an amazing value. Read More

  • Byron Pinot Noir Santa Barbara County 2013

    Snoothrank:

Fearless red berry and cherry aromas with heat and spice in equal measure. Good floral aromas, mountain herbs and a touch of violet. In the mouth, it's quite fruit forward, full of red fruit, mostly cherry but with some strawberry, cranberry and even watermelon though that's much lighter. Fresh acidity and good structure support the fruit flavor... Read More

  • Byron Chardonnay Santa Barbara County 2013

    Snoothrank:

Medium intensity aromas of lemon, pear, and toast. Crisp apple flavors show first on the palate, with tangerine, pineapple and lemon following behind. Smooth and clean, it's definitely a dry wine but with some perceived sweetness because of the fresh acidity, warm climate fruit and the vanilla notes of the oak. Read More

  • Freemark Abbey was actually quite good back in the late '60s, all through the '70s and into the '80s. They were even included in the 1976 Judgment of Paris where they took 10th place, amongst some very heavyweight competition. Will post those results, fully expecting the formatting to go awry... ;-( For the reds, then the whites:RankGradeWineVin... Read More

Steel. Not the best finish and not the best start. I've been to Byron and they really do try and make a relatively good product but competing against other ca chards. this glass leaves me wanting. Read More

  • Pinot noir has become the great alternative. When you don’t want to give another big red wine as a gift it opens up a world of possibilities. Immediately appreciated by name alone, Pinot seems to have developed a certain cachet as the thinking man’s red wine, though there is little evidence to support that. Perhaps it comes from the history that... Read More

  • It’s a great thing when things just come together. Earlier this year I had planned a trip to California to do some tasting but it had to be postponed. When I went to reschedule I noticed a thread in the Snooth Forum  that was looking for people to join in a West Coast Pinot Noir Throw Down. I wasn’t sure what exactly that entailed but I am alway...
