In the 1980s Santa Barbara gathered fame as a cluster of serious vintners started producing Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that were praised for their character, depth and honesty. Among the group was Ken Brown who established his Byron Winery on the site of the original, historic Nielsen Vineyard. Brown’s innovative gravity-feed winemaking facility and intensive viticultural experiments helped revolutionize cold-climate grape growing in California. Today, Byron is focused on single vineyard and regional bottlings of Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from the best benchland sites throughout Santa Barbara County. – Description from Kursulla

  • Pinot noir has become the great alternative. When you don’t want to give another big red wine as a gift it opens up a world of possibilities. Immediately appreciated by name alone, Pinot seems to have developed a certain cachet as the thinking man’s red wine, though there is little evidence to support that. Perhaps it comes from the history that... Read More

  • It’s a great thing when things just come together. Earlier this year I had planned a trip to California to do some tasting but it had to be postponed. When I went to reschedule I noticed a thread in the Snooth Forum  that was looking for people to join in a West Coast Pinot Noir Throw Down. I wasn’t sure what exactly that entailed but I am alway... • Byron Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 2011

    Snoothrank:

Floral with raspberry and cranberry fruits on the nose along with dry, sandy soil tones and some lovely smoky herb and beet root accents. Light on the palate and rather mouth filling if not weighty with aromatic light red fruits that show fine floral and herbal accents. Gaining lovely sweet tea nuance on the backend and finishing with fine grai... Read More

  • Byron Pinot Noir San Barbara1 2011

    Snoothrank:

Tight on the nose with some oak showing a hint of cocoa and a sweet medicinal edge to emerging black cherry fruit that shows some bitter orange rind notes and gently floral top notes. Also a bit tight in the mouth, showing fine red cherry skin and raspberry, almost strawberry fruit in an attractively lean and well focused style. This has the fe... Read More

  • Byron Pinot Noir San Barbara1 2011

    Snoothrank:

Nice red berry fruit on the nose with sour cherry and berry notes. Hints of cedar dust and cinnamon. Suggestions of darker, blue fruit as well. Vibrant and lively on the palate with an undertone of blueberry and darker red fruit with a zing of subtle cinnamon throughout. Some acai and purple plum notes as well. A nice herbal suggestion. • Byron Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley 2010

    Snoothrank:

Aromas driven by cedar and spice. Red flowers, cinnamon stick, ripe red berry fruit driven by strawberry. Sleek palate with dried flowers including rose petals. Finely grained tannin with dark berry fruit which leans a tad sour. Wild red and black raspberry with dried herbal hints and a nice mineral tone. Best with food. Good acidity. 87 pts. Read More

  • Byron Chardonnay Santa Maria Valley 2007

    Snoothrank:

Nice apple and pear tart aromas with some fresh pie crust and baking spice accents. Luscious texture and has a creamy weight but retains a nice acidity to balance it and keep it vibrant. Tree fruit flavors with hints of apple, pear and some peach as well as hints of nectarine citrus and an ever so slight herbal note. Bright, crisp and well st... Read More
