  • Rckr, you'll notice that word "epiphany" in posts.  Searching that on the forum yields a lot of stories.  There's even a thread on the subject, and it contains my own epiphany wine. It's good to reignite that discussion, as we have newer contributors who have great stories along these lines, like yours.  Also, people have their way of thinking c... Read More

  • I remember mine completely, just  like it was yesterday, all except for the producer which I think was Tyrrell, but after 40+ yrs the name has faded.  What remains vivid is the experience.  The place was in Freemantle, just outside Perth, in 1976.  Hungry for a good meal, myself and 2 friends chanced upon this spot.  It was owned by a WW2 refuge... • Mjet - these days it's hard to think of a CA or WA Cab that will improve but that isn't very good out of the chute. That would include the entire Cab family - wines made as monovarietal bottlings or as blends of Merlot, Cab Franc, Cab Sauv, Malbec, Carmenere, etc. If you have a wine that's going to improve, it's likely to be pretty good on relea... • I had two bottles of 1996 BV Rutherford a couple weeks ago.  Not the flagship, and I paid, with all that aging, $30 per.  And they rocked.  Lots of pricey cabs are made for upfront impact and are meant to drink young, so I think price has little to do with it.  Lots of people buy wines to collect just because they are pricey (see: SQN) that prob... • Oh yes! A 60's BV Georges de la Tour opened in the early 00's will go down as one of my greatest in this category. The cork exploded into hundreds of pieces, so we had bits of cork along with every sip but my friends and I still thought it was glorious.2000 Margaux I was lucky enough to try last year also would have to qualify.2005 Leoville Poyf... • Well. GregT, let's try a few of those on President's day weekend and find out.I should probably have included a '68 BV GdlT that I drank in 1975, and that Yverdon Cab we bought at the Santa Ana Trader Joe's in '77 but the memories are a little too dim....Can I include whisk(e)y?  My first bottle of Weller Centennial in '98 or so.  Few experience... • Hard to say what it exactly is, but we've all had moments when wines were really open and "singing" maybe after a quick decant, or hours of air, they just started to open and catch fire. I can think of quite a few wines that stick out in this way, though it seems like a very unpredictable phenomenon. Also, what the heck is going on with wines th... Read More
