As you approach this winery on a lonely dirt road, it looks like a flying saucer has landed in the middle of a vineyard. Using modern technology and both local and international expertise, the Spanish Ortega Gil-Fournier family aims to produce the highest-quality wines. Grapes are planted in rocky, sandy soil on three estates at an altitude of 1,200 meters (3,940 feet), producing reds with intense color and strong tannins. Tours with an oenologist and lunch are available by appointment. There's a small charge for tasting. – Description from mriskic

  • Urban Carignan 2013

Pleasing medium-to-big bodied red. Notes of blueberry and a little sweetness in the nose. Nicely balanced. We had this with pasta and it went very well. You could also pair this with roasted meats or fowl. Read More

  • Bodega O. Fournier Beta Crux 2005

Acorn squash, pumpkin, and other fall vegetables are present in the nose, and the tempranillo brings a nice richness, if not much depth, to the mouth; a nice accompaniment to an unadorned steak. At 3,600 feet, could these be the highest tempranillo vines in the world? (AV 86, Read More

  • O Fournier Urban Ribera del Duero 2008

This was my first Ribera del Duero. It was a bit more smokey than I had expected and not as fruity as the Rioja styles that I've enjoyed drinking. Thinking will probably need to try a few more Riberas to get used to this type of taste...Color is garnet red, opaque; smokey aroma, spice notes, and hints of dried berry fruits Read More
