Pago de Cirsus estate covers 135 hectares of land in the town of Ablitas, in south Navarra. The winery stands to the north in the highest part of a chateau-style estate. It takes advantage of a natural valley between two small hills, with just one of its elevations facing the vineyard. Standing next to the winery is an enchanting five-star hotel, located in a unique 23-metre tower-house built from ashlar stones in the style of the old fourteenth-century fortresses of Olite and the Kingdom of Navarre. The aim of the winery and its owner, film producer Iñaki Nuñez, is to make a grand cru-style wine, using only the best grapes from the estate's vineyards.

A tad off (TCA?) with mango and pineapple but a touch of wet cardboard. There's a decent amount of acidity with the tropical fruit but not much depth. Read More

  • So what’s the first thing you think of when you read Cariñena? I thought of the grape Cariñena, aka Carignane, eponymous as it is. What I did not think of was the region Cariñena in Spain’s province of Aragon. Why is that? It’s a good question, and one I resolved while visiting the region briefly early last month. Cariñena the region doesn’t jum... Read More

  • Las Pizarras del Jalon Garnacha Vinas Viejas 2008

Reticent aromas of raspberry, tar, and old wood appear on the nose which gains subtle dried herb and candied black raspberry nuance with air. Moderately light bodied in the mouth this shows some very attractive bitter fruit flavors early in the moth. Still with fairly firm tannins, this feels nicely structured and firm in the mouth with a slight... Read More
