The first settlers of the region were the Vacceos, Celt Iberian people of horsemen and warriors who managed to evade Roman invasions. German Barbarians invaded later, but were the Arabs who razed the region to the ground, turning into a desert in the 8th century... Almanzor was responsible for the destruction of Trigueros de Santa María del Castillo, stronghold and fortified site, that even now the layout of its wall can be seen. With the Reconquest in the 10th century people from other regions came here and their union with the survival groups gave birth to today’s’ population. At that time, this region was the foundation upon which several monasteries, castles and medieval fortresses were built. When the area was settled, in 911, San Tirso Monastery was built on the same site San Miguel Church currently occupies.
