Taste bursts with smooth leather, spice, a little wood finally giving way to berries with nice final burst of a little acidity. Finish is moderately long but not overpowering. Works on its own or with food and has at least a few years of aging potential. I really like this wine both on its own merits but also for the price.    (hide)

  A couple of my favorite wines on a budget are riojas, Cali zin, and Argentine malbecs. Bodegas LAN Rioja Reserva (04 or 05) is a nice smooth tempranillo w/ mild oak. Read moreA couple of my favorite wines on a budget are riojas, Cali zin, and Argentine malbecs. Bodegas LAN Rioja Reserva (04 or 05) is a nice smooth tempranillo w/ mild oak. Rosenblum and Mauritson make some decent Zinfandel from $12-20. My favorite for the buck is Seghesio's Sonoma County (the old vines isn't too impressive or different to me for the extra markup). I'm really enjoying Telteca Anta Reserva 04 for $15. It's got nice fruit w/ smooth tannins and drinks great to me for the price. Pascual Toso and Concha y Toro make some more heavily oaked versions. Marques de Grinon is a surprisingly bold wine for $20 w/ dark fruits, some spice, and chewy tannins. Let it open up for 20-30 minutes or the alcohol really shows. And Italy will be a wonderful place to go for some wine experiences. I first found wine when I was 19 in Tuscany. I'm actually looking forward to getting back into their reds now that I've really begun to appreciate wine more.    (hide)

  I can only describe this one as Christmassy. Dark, plummy, with coffee and chocolate overtones, but save it for a Christmas a few years from now. It needs more time in the bottle.
