Blending different varietals, different lots and even different vintages is an art as old as winemaking itself. In Bordeaux, the blending of the famous five - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec - is a centuries old art. Each component is thought to add a level of complexity to the wine. Over the past 20 years, Nicolás and Laura Catena and their vineyard management team have worked tirelessly in the discovery, identification and development of key microclimates in the high altitude wine country of Mendoza, Argentina. Nicolás Catena has planted an almost countless number of varietals and clones throughout his mountain vineyard sites. This quest for quality lead Nicolás and Laura Catena to a crucial discovery regarding the influence of altitude on grape cultivation in Mendoza. Observing the important differences in soil types, average temperatures and thermal amplitudes that exist at varying altitudes, he found that vineyard sites which are just a few Read more »

Bodega Catena Zapata on Snooth

  • Nicolas Catena Zapata 2007

The profound violet color screams mostly cabernet sauvignon, but somehow this blends manages to taste lighter and more of malbec. There is plenty of structure bearing a variety of red berry flavors tinged with ginger; one just feels it could be deeper, more concentrated, and more satisfying especially for the price. • Catena Alta Chardonnay 6/Cs Argentina 2009

Offers a distinctive note of orange blossom honey and a reasonably long finish, but without the mouth-filling quality one would expect from Catenas higher line of wines. (AV 85, Read More

  • Bodega Catena Zapata Cabernet Sauvignon Agrelo Nicolás Catena Zapata 2008

A tantalizing bouquet of orange blossom, fine herbs, and wood smoke gives way to touch of sweetness and a bitter if not altogether unpleasant finish. (AV 85, Read More

  • Bodega Catena Zapata Cabernet Sauvignon Agrelo Alta Zapata Vineyard 2008

A class act, from the gorgeous violet shades in the glass, to the bouquet that alternates between orange blossoms and black cherry, through the subtle and velvety feel in the mouth, through to the unexpectedly sweet and jammy finish. This is not a barnburner cabernet, but its a smooth operator that would accompany subtly flavored meats with styl... Read More

  • Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec Agrelo 2010

What a bouquet! Its beguiling, with endless wafts of cut flowers and ripe red fruit. The rest of the experience is not quite at the same level an unctuous note of black cherry, but not enough depth to sustain it. Still a worthy malbec, but not up to the standard of the 2009 edition. • Bodega Catena Zapata Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

A deep bouquet of ink and green plum telegraphs the dark, almost burnt flavor of the wine, rounded out by touches of nutmeg and clove. Its still a bit tannic and lacks some depth after the first few sips, but it could develop into a profound cabernet dominated by sturdy black currant. (AV 86, Read More

  • Catena Alta Chardonnay 2010

A finely structured wine, if not generous. The dark honey color is certainly appealing, as is the mix of floral and toasted flavors conveyed to both nose and mouth (where they are joined by touches of anise), but the overall character is still rather austere. (AV 88, Read More

  • Bodega Catena Zapata Cabernet Sauvignon Alamos 2010

Rather unassuming, with just a slight plum bouquet and touches of licorice and blackberry in the mouth. The flavor is pleasant, certainly not overbearing, but there are undesirable tinges of tannin and bitterness that may mellow with age. (AV 86, Read More

  • Alamos Torrontes 2011

$9 Intense balsa wood, lemon, pollen and spicy nettle-toned floral aromas greet the nose. Rich and slightly soft in the mouth, this shows a subtle sweet, honeycomb edge to its slightly gamy, tropical Lifesaver fruit flavors. There's a touch of pineapple here as well as a hint of coconut cream, all layered over some orange-toned kiwi base note... Read More
