Blending different varietals, different lots and even different vintages is an art as old as winemaking itself. In Bordeaux, the blending of the famous five - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec - is a centuries old art. This quest for quality lead Nicolás and Laura Catena to a crucial discovery regarding the influence of altitude on grape cultivation in Mendoza. Observing the important differences in soil types, average temperatures and thermal amplitudes that exist at varying altitudes, he found that vineyard sites which are just a few Read more »

  • Bodega Catena Zapata Cabernet/Malbec Nicolas Catena Zapata Argentina Red 2004

    Snoothrank:

Enjoyed this on 4 Sep, 2014. Have had it in my cellar since Nov 2009, so 5 years. Dark purple in colour, strong and intense with blackcurrant and minerals on the nose, plus some coffee and leather, Complex, ripe, and intense on the palate, and maintains a high level of elegance, smoothness while still having some intense power. It could well ha... Read More

  • Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

    Snoothrank:

Smoky, earthy and a bit fudgy on the nose with a fine floral aspect and some gentle meaty notes. Subtle, low and soft on entry with slowly building richness of blueberry and cherry pie flavors rolling across the palate followed by some sweet oak spice and a hint of vanilla. This is supple and yet juicy, round and lacking a bit of focus in the mo... Read More

  • Catena Alta Chardonnay 2010

    Snoothrank:

Pretty oaky and creamy on the nose with hints of heather and almonds supporting ripe green apple and almost melonny/pumpkin like fruit. Big, rich and a bit buttery though with plenty of supporting acid. This is a rather flamboyant wine, full of toasty oak spice and vanilla flavors that work well with the honeydew melon and green apple fruit on t... Read More
