  • Blackwood Lane Alliance 2006

    Snoothrank:

OK, so let's talk about this second wine by Charles Herrod: after nearly 13 years in the bottle, it looks dark and Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) with bricking at the glass rim... bouquet is slow to open (although decanted), with black currant dominating with a hint of vanilla; entry is smooth, only slightly warm (14% alcohol), with dissipated tannin ... • Blackwood Lane the Reference 2006

    Snoothrank:

Among the first vintages of this garagiste-style wine from Langley, BC (grapes sourced from the southern Okanagan Valley) and made by the more-than-interesting hand of one Charles Herrold, this wine is world-class, certainly: the nose is distinctive with mostly ripe cherry, vanilla and cake spice (flan). Entry is very special for a BC wine: the... Read More

  • Blackwood Lane Merlot 2014

    Snoothrank:

OK, this wine has the usual spice and port bouquet of all wines produced at Blackwood, but hey taste great nonetheless. the wine has, yes a port-like bouquet with vanilla and spice; the entry is smooth with cherry and tobacco on the mid palate. A very nice wine, but not in the vein of the usual Bordelais. Still, if you know the other wines in ... Read More

  • Blackwood Lane Alliance 2009

    Snoothrank:

The 2009 Blackwood Lane Alliance (accent on the second "a") is a stylized Bordelais wine made from fruit sourced in the Okanagan Valley of BC It is slightly coy on the nose, with cherry dominating plus a hint of cassis. Appearance has some obvious bricking on the rim, but depth of colour still in evidence. Tannin is almost non-existant at this... Read More

  • This Topic is partially intended to start a new thread on daily wine drinking as the earlier topics are just too long and too general.  How about telling us more about your choices and helping me start a new thread for the next generation, so to speak?  The "why" is the interesting part for some of us - but pictures are always welcome; after all... • Blackwood Lane Merlot 2010

    Snoothrank:

Another winner (what's new?) for Blackwood Lane. This Merlot has a nose of red fruit, cherry wood ( such as found in a love chest) which is a marker of Carlos' wines. The palate is more cherry wood and tart red berry, with chocolate in abundance. The finish is long and rich. Better than many Bordeaux "right bank" offerings. 90 points. Read More

  • Blackwood Lane Cabernet Franc 2010

    Snoothrank:

There's nothing like a beautiful summer day in the Fraser Valley (did I mention that it was February) - but it's better with Blackwood Lane Cabernet Franc. The 2010 is deep cherry red in colour and redolent of crushed blackberry, menthol and a hint of cardamom. Entry is very pleasing - with a creamy blackberry-cherry core and a touch of spice.... • Thought I'd start a topic to see what "different" wines people are drinking. I've been on a hunt to find wines made from lesser known grapes or from unusual areas. Here's one: So, what besides cabs and chards have you tried lately? Read More

  • Blackwood Lane Pinot Noir 2009

    Snoothrank:

Blackwood Lane produces wines of quality in Southwestern British Columbia and this PN is no exception; there is a nose typical of the region with wet earth, strawberry preserve, celery, cucumber and a hint of sugar. On the palate, we receive a melange of strawberry, a touch of white pepper, black tea and white cream. This hybrid new/old world ... Read More

  • Blackwood Lane the Rebel 2009

    Snoothrank:

Blackwood Lane of Langley BC offers a Syrah as "The Rebel" (there is a story) for 2009 and has a deep red colour and nose of damson fruit and red licorice whips. The entry is smooth, slightly alcoholic, but otherwise balanced. Tastes like a Syrah-based Southern CdR-Villages. Very nice. 88 points Read More

  • Went here with a group of women a week ago and found this winery to have unfriendly staff and terrible wine. $10 per tasting was a little outrageous, especially given the fact that there are no grapes grown at this vineyard. Lots of other wineries in the region that have so much more to offer.

  • My personal favorite when considering the value as well as the overall quality is the Merlot. It shares some characteristics with the Reference product with both being a little jammier than the Alliance. The Alliance carrying a little more old world Meritage sort of style. Charles Herrold has done an excellent job with the wines and continues to...

  • Blackwood Lane Winery is a must to visit when touring the wineries of the Fraser Valley both the 2006 Merlot and the 2006 Reference are 5 Star or 10 out of 10 rating. The hospitality at the winery is fantastic!

  • In 2009, Blackwood Lane’s 2006 Alliance Bordeaux-style red was declared winner of Icon Wines' ‘Wine of the Year’ award. Produced from Southern-grown Okanagan grapes, the vintage has been described as a “phenomenal wine full of complexity and flavor.” For a full review of the product line, visit renowned author and wine critic John Schreiner’s b...
