We are a small vineyard just five minutes from the Village of Havelock North in Hawkes Bay Wine Country. Our focus is on premium Bordeaux styled red varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Our award winning whites include Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. All our wines are Estate Grown and the fruit is hand picked. With just over 25 acres many of our wines are available only through the cellar door and this website. Our elevated north facing site on the lower slopes of the Te Mata hills is not only an excellent location for grape growing it also provides us with stunning views, a warm sheltered micro-climate and a perfect situation for the visitor to spend an hour or two, a night or two or even a week or two. You can taste our wines, have lunch at the Bistro, a Summer Saturday morning at the Market, an evening at a concert in the amphitheatre or all of the above by staying in one of our properties. Because we are not large, we are very keen on building a relationship with the person Read more »

  • It’s a great thing when things just come together. Earlier this year I had planned a trip to California to do some tasting but it had to be postponed. When I went to reschedule I noticed a thread in the Snooth Forum  that was looking for people to join in a West Coast Pinot Noir Throw Down. I wasn’t sure what exactly that entailed but I am alway... • I write this in the middle of a trip to California, the primary purpose of which was to taste Zinfandel. You see I love Zinfandel, think it’s the country’s greatest wine in fact. There is more diversity with Zin, plantedas it is basically throughout the state, than any other wine. Not only is it planted throughout the state but it hasin fact fou... Read More

  • Out of the way, down a drive lost in Spring Mountain, one comes upon Smith-Madrone, a winery that speaks as much of the past as the present. There’s a bit of a Twilight Zone feel here; it’s in a GPS black hole, and somehow it recalls the innocence of a simpler time. (“Willoughby, the next stop is Willoughby.”) Stuart and Charlie Smith play their... Read More

  • It’s the holiday season and everyone is recommending Pinot Noir again. What is it with folks, do they just like to take the path of least resistance? Will there come a day when Pinot is not the end all of holiday wine recommendations? Probably not. Lambrusco and Blaufrankisch have a whole set of issues that will prevent them from ever garnering ... Read More

  • Sometimes, I’m not exactly sure what my job is here at Snooth. I do get to review wine, which many people think is a glamorous and desirable thing to do. The truth is, it’s just a great vehicle for pissing people off. I can piss off producers by either not reviewing their wines or not reviewing their wines well, and I can piss off the consumers.... • So I did not marinade this myself.  It comes from the Freedom Meat Locker in Watsonville, CA.  I am cooking the behemoth up on Friday for a gathering.  I wanted to stick to "southern comfort" as far as sides (was thinking maple mashed sweet potatoes or chipolte queso yams, collard greens/bacon), but I have guests who do not like the sweet potato... • During the Rose virtual tasting, some folks started talking about the various ways to make rose.  (Bleed off wine early from red maceration, shorten contact between skins and wine, mix red and white, which is banned some places).  But someone said that all grapes have white flesh.  Almost perfectly true, but there is a very small group of grapes... • Last week in A Sneak Peek at ZAP Festival Zinfandels, we went through some of the non-Sonoma County Zinfandels that will be featured at the upcoming ZAP (Zinfandel Advocates & Producers) annual grand tasting at its Zinfandel Festival, to be held in San Francisco, January 27 - 29. While there were some gems to be found in that mix of appellations... Read More
