In 1997, an unassuming young viticulturalist and winemaker, Andrew Nugent, chanced his arm in the emerging wine region of the Adelaide Hills. Andrew grew up next door to Penfolds at Magill and his formative wine years were spent in South Australia’s McLaren Vale. It was here that he honed his craft as a viticulturalist, vineyard manager and winemaker. The Nugent family live and work on the picturesque property, reflecting the strong sense of community in the Adelaide Hills. Andrew exudes a quiet but steely determination to grow Bird in Hand into one of the world’s great wineries. “We live and work at the winery. We know the best thing we can do for our community is grow and produce the best wine and olives we can. Our success will be our community’s success. A high tide lifts all the boats in the bay. At Bird in Hand we’ve assembled the best team of people, we’ve painstakingly selected the perfect terroir and we’re well on our way.” The sense of community emanates from Andrews mother Joy Read more »

  • I'm a big believer in going relatively simple at TG and letting the food be the star. I too am smoking the bird.I've got a Gewurz that has a lot of acid, a Bandol Rose and have been debating what to do about a red. There's a pretty good Languedoc 100% Syrah on sale in PA that is ready to go and solid. On the other hand I don't think Pinot will h... Read More

  • So, do you have your wine planned out yet for the Thanksgiving meal? I'm going a bit off course this year as I am smoking my turkey so I'm probably going to go heavy on Syrah rather than Pinot Noir. But that could change based on input from the guests.First off I'll likely pop a 2010 Copain Baker Ranch Syrah as it shows quite Pinot-like and I ha... Read More

  • Bird In Hand Pinot Noir Adelaide Hills Sparkling 2011

    Snoothrank:

I purchased this wine in British Columbia for $34 CDN and I feel like this wine represents a really good value. A lovely crisp, refreshing dry rose wine with a fine bead. Smells of strawberry + slightly herbaceous (strawberry fields) and a slight yeasty character. Strawberry and cherry on the palate with lovely acidity. Not as simple and sweet a... Read More

  • Being a huge fan of the Rex Cab (as a "great-value, lots-of-bang-for-your-buck" wine) and mildly fond of their Merlot and Pinot Noir, I was hoping that their Sauvignon Blanc would be of comparable quality ... but all I can say is, "Bleah." Harsh, burning, and nearly flavorless, with next to nothing in the bouquet -- not at all like the Rex reds.... Read More

  • There's an argument to be made for Riesling, and it's made on a regular basis. It goes something like this: Riesling is great, it's flexible and it's food friendly, with wines ranging from dry to syrupy sweet, so there's something for everyone to like. This has been the argument of the day for years now. Trouble is Riesling still finds resistanc... Read More

I also need to work on a 2009 vintage report for Harpers Wine & Spirit. But allow me just to reflect on a marvelous Chateau Eglise Clinet Pomerol 1989 whose plum and spice richness matched a New Year's Day prime rib of beef perfectly.
