Back in 1995, when Victoria and I started dating in Des Moines, our favorite game was “Guess the Wine.” We would take turns bringing a blind wine and make the other person guess the varietal and region. When I look back on those dates, there is little mystery about how we arrived where we are today. Soon after that, we moved to Minneapolis and fell in with a group of wine lovers whose passion and knowledge fanned our flame. We started taking regular trips to wine country in California, where we met many of the finest winemakers. We were so inspired by them that to this day we follow many of their principles. We learned first-hand about Philip Togni’s attention to every minute detail…. Saw how Bob Foley would only pick fruit if his palate -- not some lab test -- told him it was time… Heard Greg La Follette telling us how careful you have to be when making decisions in the winery because even the smallest decision has an impact on the final wine. Our conversations still reverberate with me whether Read more »

Bevan Cellars on Snooth

  • I have had a general dislike for syrahs for several years now... they just seem too BIG for me, and my tastes have changed toward lighter-style wines.  However I have discovered that there are some syrahs that I very much enjoy..  Recently, I was on my way up to Russian River.  I stopped in at Taft Street Winery in Sebastopol, www.taftstreetwine... • Bevan Cellars Sauvignon Blanc Oakville 2010

    Snoothrank:

On my short list of best Sauv Blancs I've yet to try. An amazing array of layers and flavors. At the same time bright and lively but also (due to part of the wine aged in neutral oak) a creamy texture in the middle. The wine shows flavors from key lime and grapefruit to pineapple and kiwi with hints of fresh cut grass. Truly lovely! Read More

  • Bevan Cellars Merlot Oakville Alexis' Cuvée Showket Vineyards 2008

    Snoothrank:

I would put this wine on the short list of best merlots out there today. Deep, unctuous texture, explosive blackberry fruit, whispers of vanilla oak, oh and I think someone might of thrown a bar of high quality dark chocolate into the barrel while no one was looking because there's chocolate and more chocolate in this wine. Absolutely wonderful! Read More

  • Bevan Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Mae's Cuvee Showket Vineyards 2007

    Snoothrank:

Look out Opus One because there's a new kid in town that's coming out strong! It's hard for me to express how fundamentally great this wine was. From its rich layers of flavor to its balance of tannin, acid, oak, fruit, and body to a nose that was practically trying to escape the glass. The Oakville intensity shows through very well. The nos... Read More

  • It was at Vinify Wine Service in Santa Rosa Calif which is a custom crush facility where many small Sonoma County Boutique wineries make their wares. 19 wine makers pouring 72 different bottlings. Made it about 2/3 through the presentation before I started getting palate fatigue and everything started tasting alike. Lots of good Pinots, a couple... Read More
