Back in 1995, when Victoria and I started dating in Des Moines, our favorite game was “Guess the Wine.” We would take turns bringing a blind wine and make the other person guess the varietal and region. When I look back on those dates, there is little mystery about how we arrived where we are today. Soon after that, we moved to Minneapolis and fell in with a group of wine lovers whose passion and knowledge fanned our flame. We started taking regular trips to wine country in California, where we met many of the finest winemakers. We were so inspired by them that to this day we follow many of their principles. We learned first-hand about Philip Togni’s attention to every minute detail…. Saw how Bob Foley would only pick fruit if his palate -- not some lab test -- told him it was time… Heard Greg La Follette telling us how careful you have to be when making decisions in the winery because even the smallest decision has an impact on the final wine. Our conversations still reverberate with me whether Read more »

  • Carnivores and grillers, a few reasons to love Syrah: it’s a fantastic wine for pairing with any roasted meats, especially red meats like beef and lamb, as well as wild game. It is often peppery and sometimes smoky, with a roasted fruit and/or roasted meat flavor profile that makes it a fine accompaniment to anything barbecued or grilled (even, ... Read More

  • Chateau Boswell and Bevan Cellars We Will Rock You Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Blend 2011

    Snoothrank:

I tasted the barrel sample of this Napa Valley Premiere auction lot, the only red wine Bevans made thus far at Chateau Boswell. It will be released in September/October of this year to the buyer, Total Wine & More, which paid $625/bottle. Its a deeply concentrated wine, opaque in the glass with aromas rising well above the rim. The palate is imp... Read More

  • In my daily travels I pass through the Napa Valley every Monday. A few weeks ago I asked Mike Smith a question about yeast for Sauv Blanc and he invited me to stop by and check out some of his new vintage before it went into bottle shock. Today was the day so I stopped by his cellar at Envy Wines in Calistoga. One of the more personable, down to... Read More

  • Bevan Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville the Bab's Showket Vineyards 2009

    Snoothrank:

Quite different than the '07 or '08, the wine is rich, opulent and concentrated with a the primary emphasis on fruit. As always though the tannins are significant but soft and supple. I tried this at the winery only 3 weeks after bottling and it was already drinking spectacularly. Read More

  • Bevan Cellars Ontogeny Oakville 2009

    Snoothrank:

Not as Earth-shattering as the 2008 but still an excellent wine. I don't know how he gets his wines to drink so well so early without seeming to lose any structure or complexity. The wine was very bright, lots of red currants and black raspberries. Read More

  • Bevan Cellars Ontogeny Oakville 2008

    Snoothrank:

Another knockout Bevan Cellars wine. There's Kirsch, dried herbs, oaky vanilla, cocoa plus a bit of smoke develops as the wine aerates. This is Bevan's drink now wine and as such has just enough tannin to maintain structure but not enough to overwhelm the freshness of the wine. The texture is like chocolate wrapped in velvet and the finish goe... Read More
