Over 30 years ago Ernest (Ernie) Peninou founded a root stock nursery in Winters. Ernie, who lived in San Francisco, partnered with local grower Dan Martinez to grow and sell root stock to wineries in neighboring Napa and Sonoma County. In 2000, Daniel R. Martinez, son of Dan Martinez Sr., and Santiago Moreno, long-time foreman for Martinez Orchards partnered to plant vines and form Berryessa Gap Vineyards. They were joined by winemaker Mike Anderson, nephew of Ernie Peninou. Dan, Santiago and Mike Anderson have been friends since the early 1970’s. They were all involved in the nursery business founded by Ernie who deserves indirect credit for the birth of our winery. Today the nursery is operated as Martinez Orchards. The nursery allowed Dan, Mike and Santiago to experiment and make home wines from many grape varieties. What Berryessa Gap serves and sells now is their favorites. Experiments continue and as time goes on there might be more grape varietals grown and more wines to try! – Description from djjoleM

  • Berryessa Gap Zinfandel Yolo County 2005

    Snoothrank:

Jammy, spicy, fruitbomb of a nose. Flavors are a bit drier than the aromas would suggest. It's a bit rustic, with some dark chocolate and raspberry notes, definitely has some heat and a lingering finish. Read More

  • Berryessa Gap Zinfandel Yolo County 2005

    Snoothrank:

Great nose of toasted cedar. Medium bodied with a tight raspberry core and dry fall leaves on the palate. Good structure throughout and finishes with a long toasty semi-sweet jamminess. To me it combines some nice elements of a Pinot and a Zin. It's growing on me. Read More

  • Berryessa Gap Petite Sirah Yolo County Reserve 2005

    Snoothrank:

A bit of banana and walnuts, laden with paprika. Kind of spicy and tannic on the attack, makes for a very enjoyable gulp. Couldn't drink a lot of it though. Read More

  • Berryessa Gap Petite Sirah Yolo County Reserve 2005

    Snoothrank:

Deep ripe blackberry and black pepper nose with an extremely juicy aroma. Palate is beautifully spicy, with loads of blackberry fruit and leather, finishes rough and raw and covered with tar. Read More

  • Berryessa Gap Malbec 2006

    Snoothrank:

Dark red fruit nose, herbal and full of black pepper. Palate is much brighter, full of cranberries, cherries and hot spices. If you like dry wines that carry a bunch of apparent sweetness, and don't mind a bit of cough syrup, I'd say this one is for you! Read More

Watermelon, blackberries and briary spice on the nose, dry white zin with good richness giving this a bit of a round, lush feel, the fruit is a bit indistinct but also a touch brambly, clean finish 86pts Read More

  • Berryessa Gap Tempranillo Yolo County 2006

    Snoothrank:

Metals, notably copper, earthy, mildly tannic and more citric, the attack is elegant and bold, followed by a buttery herbal gaminess, and a long, sumptuous release. Read More

  • Berryessa Gap Tempranillo Yolo County 2006

    Snoothrank:

Black cherry and kirsch on the nose, but some dry dustiness as well. Solid tannins, but the fruit comes over muted. The finish has a nice mineral, stony edge. Read More

  • Berryessa Gap Tempranillo Yolo County 2006

    Snoothrank:

Shows a touch of VA on the nose but there's a nice background note of dried grasses and roast beef that help to set of the raspberry fruit. In the mouth this is just a little chunky but offers up some nice, slightly rustic dark berry fruit that has a touch of a peppery, syrah like edge. Nicely done. 87pts Read More
