"Beau lieu" - A Beautiful Story about a Beautiful Place In 1900, when Georges de Latour's wife, Fernande, first laid eyes on the land that would become their original Rutherford vineyard, she named it "beau lieu," or "beautiful place." Shortly thereafter, de Latour sold his thriving cream of tartar business, bought the four-acre ranch and founded Beaulieu Vineyard with the vision of making Napa Valley wines that would rival those of his native France. De Latour quickly made a name for himself by importing Phylloxera-resistant rootstock from Europe to the recently-ravaged fledgling California wine industry. He also began selling wine to the Catholic Church, establishing a strong relationship that would allow Beaulieu Vineyard to become the only Napa Valley winery to remain in business during Prohibition. In fact, during Prohibition the winery increased its business. After the repeal in 1933, de Latour began searching for someone who could contribute European winemaking Read more »

Peppery nose of cassis and black fruits along with hints of licorice. Notes of turned soil over aromas of vanilla and toasted coconut. On the palate, it's got big flavor of peppery berry fruit, black plum, cassis, licorice and roasted herbs. Has a rustic feel and isn't as polished as Napa usually is for BV. Not a bad thing here though. Good ... Read More

As a Californian, I have felt the loss of such old names as Almaden, Christian Brothers and Inglenook. (OK, I guess Almaden still exists as a mocking shell of its former being. OK, I know it never was great, but their bottles did have corks. Maybe I am the only person who feels a sense of loss of Almaden.) Another of the old abused names is ... Read More

Subtle nose of bright red fruit, dusty earth, and some white pepper. On the palate, brightly acidic, with cherry, cherry, and some more cherry. Not a lot of complexity here, but nicely balanced and drinkable. My only complaint is its high alcohol content, at 14.5%, it makes this Pinot a bit too hot, though this is a typical expression of Napa's ... Read More

I'm planning on being in Napa on Wednesday the 25th and will probably visit at least two wineries while there. Anyone care to meet up, just let me know.My first priority seems to be Outpost Winery, though there are a few others I'm considering, I'll probably start at Outpost at 2pm if they can accommodate. Big sour cherry on the nose. Herb-tinged palate with cherry and tobacco with some sage and light cocoa. Some blue fruit on the finish. Nice. Not super complex, but tasty and well suited for food.6/23/12 Read More
