"Beau lieu" - A Beautiful Story about a Beautiful Place In 1900, when Georges de Latour's wife, Fernande, first laid eyes on the land that would become their original Rutherford vineyard, she named it "beau lieu," or "beautiful place." Shortly thereafter, de Latour sold his thriving cream of tartar business, bought the four-acre ranch and founded Beaulieu Vineyard with the vision of making Napa Valley wines that would rival those of his native France. De Latour quickly made a name for himself by importing Phylloxera-resistant rootstock from Europe to the recently-ravaged fledgling California wine industry. He also began selling wine to the Catholic Church, establishing a strong relationship that would allow Beaulieu Vineyard to become the only Napa Valley winery to remain in business during Prohibition. In fact, during Prohibition the winery increased its business. After the repeal in 1933, de Latour began searching for someone who could contribute European winemaking Read more »

  • Georges de Latour Napa Valley Beaulieu Vineyard Private Reserve 1999

Tasted this wine after having some Nebbiolo from Baja California. So, I can't say that my opinion was pristine. The wine was full-bodied and easy to drink. Not terribly fruity (which I liked) and with mellow tannins. Heck it has 14 years on it. So, the tannins should be quite civilized. US$61.99 at Wine Club, Santa Ana in 2003. Read More

This wine is their Red Blend, not their Zin. Nice everyday wine. Zin in the nose but the Barbera comes through also. Not a wine to ponder but enjoyable. Lighter style. My rating-- 84 Read More

  • In 2004, the movie Sideways put a major dent in California Merlot sales when Miles uttered the immortal words “I am not drinking fucking Merlot!” At that point there were a lot of ripe, insipid Merlots on the market—many grown in areas that were too hot for the grape to ripen slowly, gaining full physiological maturity—so Miles’ sentiments reson... Black Plum color. Lots of black currant scents. Also, scent of oak. Yup, lots of blackberry, black currant on the palate. Nice acid balance. Very little drying tannin effect. Pretty smooth finish. US$26.99 at the Wine Club in Santa Ana in 2009. Read More
