Bear Flag is a winery founded by artsy, young winemakers Beth Culter and Hillary Forbess in Modesto, California. The winery is named for the Bear Flag Revolt that gave California its independence from Mexico in 1846. Their portfolio specializes in red and white blends only, often employing less obvious grapes such as Tempranillo, Touriga, Alicante Bouchet, Gewürztraminer, Chenin Blanc and Muscat as well as Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc. Not a Cab, Merlot or Chard in sight! The labels feature colorful illustrations by artist Eduardo Bertone.

  • Went out on a little wine buying trip while my wife went shopping for other things.  Came back a little disappointed due to the fact that new (My old Dennis retired.) manager is revamping his store under his new guidelines.  They had offered me the job previously, but to drive 90 miles daily their offer was low.  That and the fact that were bowi... Dusty, dry aromas of raspberry, cherry and plum. This is juicy and fresh in the mouth but expansive and explosive in intensity with thick tannins, blueberry and black cherry flavors, bold well integrated spice and a return to dusty dry notes of jammy black currant fruit and oak spice on the finish. Unpleasant, leafy tart aroma. Sugary and sparkling, this could be a nice summer wine - it would be for people who like this kind of thing. Very thin, some lemonade and grapefruit flavor, and a little green in the color. Funny label with lots of little cartoons. Read More

  • Bear Flag White Blend is delicious, with a crisp and zesty taste, especially pared with a summer meal.
