Since 1983 the Bass River estate has been a weekend property for the Butera family. Pasquale Butera always envisioned planting a commercial vineyard and in 1998, three hectares of vines were planted, with the cellar door opening to the public in 2004. In 2006 three more hectares of vines were planted. Bass River is part of the South Gippsland wine region which is best known for its fine, cool climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with a growing popularity for Pinot Gris The winery and vineyard sites were selected specifically for viticulture with sustainability and environmental considerations high on the agenda. The location provides ideal climate for the selected grape varieties which provide shelter from the hot winds for the white varieties, and full sun for the red varieties. Cool ripening conditions and long growing seasons from bud burst to harvest in March and April allows the berries to retain excellent acid levels and develop intense fruit flavours.
