With passion and patience, Fiona and Hal Barnett created this vineyard and winery in 1983 with the intent of producing small amounts of hand crafted Cabernet Sauvignon wines from their estate. Since the first vintage of Barnett Vineyards, Spring Mountain has proven to deserve it's own AVA and become known as a unique microclimate, producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignons and Merlots. The vineyards are located at the top of Spring Mountain, at elevation 2,000ft, and planted on steep terraces that follow the contour of the land. In some places, the grade averages in excess of 35%. Mountainside farming is very challenging. The vines must struggle to reach nutrients and water in the soil and, as a result, yield only one to two tons per acre. The elements of sun, temperature, and well-drained porous soils give an advantageous water stress to the vines and contribute to the depth, richness and character of the wines. Grapes are harvested by hand; vineyard row by row, as optimum ripeness and maturity is reached Read more »

  • I was wondering what sort of new topic I could start that would pair nicely with my previous posting 'Weekday Wines'; well here it is - Weekend Wines.  Sometimes I just have to stop and take a minute to pat myself on the back for my quick wit but alas, this isn't one of those times.  Anyway, why not talk about wines we enjoy on weekends?  These ... • I love the Ridge labels.  They are the most informative labels around.  GregT made reference to Ridge "single vineyard" bottliings and "Zin-based" bottlings.  Very few of the Ridge bottlings will have "Zinfandel" prominently displayed on the front label.  In the United States in order for a wine to be identified by a grape variety, it must conta... • Hey everyone, what are some of your favorite 'everyday' or M-F types of wines to accompany a regular dinner?  I personally have enjoyed the Montoya Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, and I usually pick it up from Total Wines out here in Virginia.  This is one of those fruit-forward cabs that isn't too complex for me to appreciate, and it usually cost... • Perhaps we could use a place to share recent purchases...Here are some '12 Burlotto Langhe Nebbiolo, which came highly recommended from a trusted friend who just got back from a month in Italy. I'm not seeing many available in the States quite yet, but was happy to find these locally. Read More

  • Out of the way, down a drive lost in Spring Mountain, one comes upon Smith-Madrone, a winery that speaks as much of the past as the present. There’s a bit of a Twilight Zone feel here; it’s in a GPS black hole, and somehow it recalls the innocence of a simpler time. (“Willoughby, the next stop is Willoughby.”) Stuart and Charlie Smith play their... Read More

  • Barnett Vineyards Pinot Noir Russian River Valley Tina Marie Vineyard 2010

    Snoothrank:

One the nose, it's got spice, white pepper, dusty cocoa and some orange zest over red berries. Flavors on the palate of black cherry and cola with raspberry and rhubarb. Firm tannins, but a balanced feel. Bold and dark style with nice structure, acid and spice. 3/3/12 Read More

  • Barnett Vineyards Chardonnay Carneros Sangiacomo Vineyard 2009

    Snoothrank:

We went to the Hollywood Bowl, again, last night, and the picnic consististed of a salmon spread opener, roasted chicken, grilled asparagus and pasta salad (with olive oil and lemon juice.) In the glass this wine has a very floral bouquet. On the palate the initial reaction is "sweet," but it is not sugar (and I don't think it is the alcohol).... Read More
