Read moredriving through the parched hills of Central Otago on a sunny afternoon became ... draining. when we came upon Bald Hills, we were welcomed in by the co-owner, Blair, who was just the loveliness NZ gentleman. he was very glad to find out that we were from California and told us he spent a few years in LA, studying at USC. I was very glad to find that an ocean and a continent away, I'd run into a fellow alum. we spent over an hour there, talking to him about the 4000 cases they make, the winemaker, the challenges, etc. he poured that 2004 Pinot and I knew we were taking a bottle back with us. we carried it through the last week of our trip in a wine carrier, bringing it inside whenever we checked into a new hotel so it wouldn't roast in the car. I wrapped it in many layers of my REI and North Face fleeces and a plastic bag, and luckily, it made it through the checked baggage handling. we enjoyed it a few months ago and again, loved it. it had a bit of solidness to it and more tannins than I'm used to, but the good balance and acidity overall, and bright red fruit with earth and spice. worth carrying back across the ocean! oh yeah, and they took top honors for Pinot Noir at the Decanter Awards recently. I'm very excited for them. a lovely wine from lovely people    (hide)
