MONTEVERTINE lies within the heart of the Chianti hills, in the community of Radda at an altitude of 425 m above sea level. Documents show that the site has been dwelled since the 11th century. Traces of the original construction, which undoubtedly was of defensive nature and which later on had been converted to a rural housing, are still preserved. Our wine-making procedure is extremely traditional and it has been never been varied since the very first vintage. The grapes are harvested by hand and then fermented in glazed cement vats, without temperature control, and the must is topped up twice daily in order to keep the top marc moist and to obtain a slow extraction of the tannins from the skins. After the racking off, the malolactic fermentation is also carried out using cement vats. At the end of the malolactic fermentation, our wines are stored in wooden barrels over a period of approximately two years. The wines will never be filtered and the topping-up method, without any pumps, is used for the bottling. For the ageing of our wines we use oak barrels from Slavonia with a 5.5 to 18 hectolitre capacity and 225 litre Allier casks.

Azienda Agricola Montevertine on Snooth

  • Montevertine Rosso 2010

    Snoothrank:

Tight on the nose with some BBQ spice and oystershell minerality layered under perfumes of fennel seed and flowers. Much more open in the mouth than the nose would suggest with a hint of sweetness helping to frame transparent raspberry and strawberry fruit. This is classic mid-weight Sangiovese. A bit simple today but with lovely fruit the super... Read More

  • Montevertine Pergole Torte 1999

    Snoothrank:

Great depth of fruit. All components, acid, fruit, tannin are big and balanced in such a way that they curb one another. Still plenty of room for integration. Full and complete. Dark rich black cherry, and blackberry with aromatic cedar and scorched earth. Long finish. There are so many outstanding wines from Montevertine, and this one is notewo... Read More

  • Azzienda Agricola Montevertine Aqua Vitae le Pergo 2008

    Snoothrank:

Definitely one of the better Chianti's i've had and will have to try again for a more accurate review. But the nose is of smooth black cherry with a body on the lighter-side-of-medium that is very easy and pleasing. Read More

  • Azienda Agricola Montevertine le Pergole Torte Toscana IGT 1978

    Snoothrank:

Still showing excellent fresh, wild cherry fruit on the nose with a strong underlay of tobacco and almond skins and top notes of smoke and prosciutto. On the palate this is fresh and precise with every element fading in harmony. That harmony extends throughout the mouth and into the finish making this one of the most enjoyable wines of the night... • Montevertine Pergole Torte 1985

    Snoothrank:

This bottle most likely saw some excessive heat along the way as evidenced by the brothy notes on the nose and the seaweed edge to the fruit but it still showed some interest. The fruit was fresh yet dark with notes of black raspberries, and the palate was lovely with resolved tannins and good acids supporting the fruit which seemed ripe yet tra... Read More
