The name Fontodi comes from the Latin "Fons- odi" and dates back to Roman times since when vines have been cultivated in this region. Additionally sixteenth century documents providing evidence of vinification on the holdings and farm of "Case Via" have recently been found. From the beginning of the nineteen hundreds the wines of Fontodi have been exported all over the world, receiving many awards for their quality at important exhibitions. The Manetti family, who originate from the Chianti region, have been devoted to the production of traditional terracotta for over three centuries. In 1968 the family brought Fontodi and ever since has endeavoured to improve methods of production and to acquire new sites – Description from JelaDragoljevic

  • Fontodi Chianti Classico 2011

100% Sangiovese Tea and tobacco emerge on the nose followed by extracted, heavy carob laced aromas of roasted fruit. Big, powerful, and inelegant in the mouth, this is all chunky and showing rich, roasted fruit with harsh tannins. Raw, unbalanced and surprisingly bad. tasted twice with similar results. 70pts Read More

  • Fontodi Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Riserva 2009

The nose showed red berries, floral notes, herbs and a slight hint of vanilla. On the palate, I found tart red berries with dusty spices and herbal notes leading to a structured finish with fine grain tannins. This was a great young expression of Vigna del Sorbo. Read More

  • Fontodi Chianti Classico 2009

The nose showed cherry sauce with Tuscan dust, spicy notes, hints of mushroom and citrus. On the palate, it was focused with refined red fruits and inner floral notes. The finish was clean with pure red fruits and hints of structure. This was easily one of the best entry-level Chianti Ive tasted this year. Read More

  • This is the second part in a three part series on wine prices over the past decade. Part one can be found here, and today I follow up with part two, a look at Tuscan wines and the wines of the Rhone Valley. I love Tuscan wines and I love Sangiovese. Pure, fresh, fruity and austere all at once, it’s one of the greatest food wines on the planet, a... Read More

  • Fontodi Chianti Classico 2008

From 1.5 L, popped and poured. Marked notes of fennel & anise on top of fine, dried black cherry, underbrush, and a subtle richness at the core. Elegant, but not at all thin. Medium weight on the palate with more dried black cherry, leather, and some minerality. Fine tannins and savory notes on the finish. Well balanced, solid, and easy to drink... Read More
