The Scavino family farm is located in the village of Castiglione Falletto, where it was founded by grandfather Luigi back in 1920. It is a typical family-run Langa winery. All its wines are estate-grown, with Luigi continuing to keep to the policies of his father, Lorenzo. The wines are made following the sound criteria found in smaller cellars, with scrupulous attention given to tending the vineyards and procedures in the winery, where great respect is maintained for tradition while benefiting from modern techniques. The following wines are produced: Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Alba, Nebbiolo and Barolo. The total output is around 60,000 bottles a year. – Description from Dragac

  • Azelia Barolo DOCG 2004

    Snoothrank:

This is my second bottle of this in the last year, or so. Interesting tinges of brown in the glass. That surprises me a bit. Very light on the fruit on entry to the mouth. Overriding flavors/sensations are dust, tobacco and tannin. Tannin notwithstanding, not as full-bodied as I might have expected. Quite tart on the back of the palate. ... Read More

  • Azelia Barolo DOCG 2004

    Snoothrank:

Love the dark purple color. Very big nose--some cigar or leather, some cherry/berry fruit. Surprisingly light on the tip of the tongue. No fruit detected there at all--almost watery. As the wine moves over the tongue some cherry/berry pops up, but not much. Lot's of tannin, now. As a previous reviewer comments, air time helps this wine. T... Read More

  • I visited this winery in August 2010 and toured with Lorenzo Scavino (Luigi's son). Very good wines with attention to detail at every step of the process.

  • Azelia Barolo 2003

    Snoothrank:

Faint brickish tinge at the rim.Nose: Black cherry, rose petal, faint smokinessPalate: Intense entry on the palate. Extravagantly plush. Black cherry again on the palate, persistent subtle sweetness right up until the finish which is reminiscent of raspberry-mocha. Tannins provide interesting structure. Would definitely stand to benefit from... Read More
