Avignonesi consists of four wine-producing estates: Le Capezzine, I Poggetti, La Selva and La Lombarda. In total they comprise 225 hectares of open ground, 109 ha of vineyards and 3 ha of olive groves. Fattoria "Le Capezzine" (altitude m 300) Only a few kilometres from Montepulciano, close to the village of Valiano, stands the old farm estate Le Capezzine. It is the heart of the company and it has been impeccably restored. It contains spacious cellars for vinification, cellars for ageing and storing, the vinsantaia, the frantoio (the olive oil mill), warehouses and offices. The estate comprises 19 hectares, of which 7 hectares of vineyards divided as follows: 6 (Prugnolo Gentile) of albarello vines in the "settonce" pattern; 1 dedicated to density experimentation ranging from 2,000 to 8,500 vines per hectare with six different rootstocks; finally 0,4 hectares are dedicated to growing ancient varieties indigenous to Montepulciano and the surrounding area. • In this case, a '79 Mondavi Chardonnay Reserve stole the show. Just the fact that it was still upright, despite passive cellaring (another from a previously discussed estate sale my neighbor scored on) was enough to write about. However, this surprisingly gave some real, almost sublime pleasure, despite being on the precipice of oxidation. It dr... Read More

  • Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Avignonesi 2010

    Snoothrank:

I had this wine with a braised lamb shank and it paired very nicely. As other reviewers have noted this is a substantial wine with a lot of body and complexity. It worked well with the richness of the meat, I'm not sure I would like to drink it on its own without food. Read More

  • Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2008

    Snoothrank:

This is one of my favorite wine's on Bar Italia's wine list, though I prefer the 2007 to the 2008. The 2008 has a nose of black cherry, roasted herbs, and smoky oak and follows with flavors of the same. Great fruit with a silky texture and nicely balanced oak. It lacks the dense black currants of the 2007 that I remember. The finish is lacking f... Read More
