The winemaking philosophy at Arrowood is simple: Produce classic varietal wines using grapes exclusively from Sonoma County's diverse viticultural areas such as Russian River Valley, Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys or Sonoma-Carneros. This approach has not changed since the winery was founded in 1986 by Richard Arrowood and his wife and partner, Alis Demers Arrowood. Richard has been making wine for more than four decades. Before founding Arrowood, he was winemaker and the first employee at Chateau St. Jean. There he produced the winery's first releases: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and a wine that may have very well put Chateau St. Jean on the map - a Select Late Harvest Riesling. Arrowood Winery opened while Richard was still the winemaker at Chateau St. Jean, and for the first three years Alis ran the winery while Richard fulfilled his obligations at Chateau St. Jean. She dragged hoses in the cellar, topped barrels and ran the bottling line. She spent weekends entertaining, giving tours and hosting Read more »

    Snoothrank:

Black cherry, red cherry, with just a dash of cassis on te nose. Soft cherry peppermint sticks, clove, spice, and more black cherry on the palate. Medium tannins follow a long, evergreen & blackberry finish. A great wine for a terrific price! Read More

  • Freemark Abbey was actually quite good back in the late '60s, all through the '70s and into the '80s. They were even included in the 1976 Judgment of Paris where they took 10th place, amongst some very heavyweight competition. Will post those results, fully expecting the formatting to go awry... ;-( For the reds, then the whites:RankGradeWineVin... Read More

  • Arrowood Chardonnay 2011

    Snoothrank:

Clear, lemon-gold, medium intensity. On the nose the wine is clean, with medium intensity aromas of orange and tangerine, white flowers, creme brûlée and some evidence of lees contact. Clearly barrel fermented in oak. The wine is dry, with medium acid, med+ body. The wine has undergone malolactic fermentation, has evidence of lees contact. ... Read More

  • So I am sneaking away to Sonoma for a few days.  I have spent tons of time up in RRV and Sebastopol, and I think I want to revisit the lower valley this time- Kenwood, Glen Ellen...  I would love recommendations for wineries, hotels, motels, vac. rentals, and restaurants.  Sonoma proper would be ok to stay, as is close to those areas.  Plan on h... • Who else is still drinking the 1996 California cabs?  I had yet another bottle on Memorial Day and loved it.  Altamura '96 was lovely. Previously I've loved the 1996 BV GdLatour.  As we know, 1997 amazed people but has largely faded early. Two questions:1. Which of the 2000s vintages will age like the 96s have done so gracefully?2. Which 1996s i... Read More

  • Carnivores and grillers, a few reasons to love Syrah: it’s a fantastic wine for pairing with any roasted meats, especially red meats like beef and lamb, as well as wild game. It is often peppery and sometimes smoky, with a roasted fruit and/or roasted meat flavor profile that makes it a fine accompaniment to anything barbecued or grilled (even, ... Read More
