Andrew Rich produces wine in the state-of-the-art Carlton Winemakers Studio, the nation's first "green" cooperative winemaking facility. The studio, which is a partnership between Eric Hamacher, his wife, Luisa Ponzi of Ponzi Vineyards, and Ned and Kirsten Lumpkin of Lumpkin Construction in Seattle and Lazy River Vineyard in Yamhill, promises to be an archetype for Oregon's wine industry . The facility is home to several respected Oregon wine producers including: Hamacher Wines, Andrew Rich Wines, Bryce Vineyard, Domaine Meriwether, Dominio, Penner-Ash Wine Cellars and Soter Vineyard. Each winery will operate independently, with separate cellars and staff, but all will benefit economically from sharing state-of-the-art equipment in the gravity-driven building designed to use natural light, passive solar heat and recycled materials. The Studio has registered with the USGBC (United States Green Building Council) for certification when completed, and will be the first LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Read more »

  • Getting back your roots is a matter of blending, according to a story this past by The Australian's Max Allen.  “In our modern world we've become obsessed with single varietal wines, where each type of grape is kept separate from the others in the vineyard and the winery – planted on its own, picked on its own, fermented on its own, bottle on it... • Mesalliance Columbia Valley 2009

    Snoothrank:

Bright medium ruby. Slightly candied aromas of black cherry liqueur, licorice, bitter chocolate and violet. Sweet and smooth but a bit youthfully stunted; not a thick wine but densely packed and fine-grained, with firm acidity keeping the dark berry flavors under wraps today. Finishes with firm, suave tannins and good subtle length. I'd hol... Read More

  • After last week’s disappointing look at value priced Zinfandel you would be right to think that this week’s take on value priced Syrah, with a focus on Australian Shiraz, might produce equally horrifying results. After all if there was a poster child for big, oaky, goopy, and slightly sweet wines in the marketplace Aussie Shiraz certainly would ... Read More

  • This is no doubt too late but I would have to say that visiting wineries int he Willamette Valley is one of the least dangerous things one can do in the world of wine. Yes some wineries produce wines that may not be to your style but almost everyone is producing some pretty great wine and they are almost to a person thrilled to taste with you. I... Read More

  • Hi everyone, I have recently started to discover the great wines of Oregon and Washington, especially falling in love with the rich, dark reds (Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot). However, I am fairly new to the world of wine, and would like some recommendations, education and whatever else has to do with the wines of the North West. I hope... Read More

  • Andrew Rich Roussanne Columbia Valley 2006

    Snoothrank:

This is a really unique wine...really rich, elegant, and aromatic. Bright straw color and medium to full bodied. A distinctive nose of white peaches and wildflowers and maybe some almond. Soft and rich on the palate with more white peach and wildflower notes with some vanilla, honey/marzipan.. gently supported by acidity. Fairly long finish. Read More
