The story of Andrea Oberto might seem banal or sound like the classic yarn, told yet again, but I can assure you that every time I find myself telling people how my father came to be a winemaker, the expression on their faces is one of pure amazement. Indeed after a long, exhausting week of work, undoubtedly driven by his great passion for the land, Andrea would still find the energy to work on the three hectares of vineyards he inherited from his father. Part of the grapes from these vineyards would be sent to the local cooperative winery, while the rest would be turned into wine and sold to private clients by the demijohn. Nowadays the Andrea Oberto estate continues to be a family company, but the three hectares of vineyards have become 16, and the demijohns are now bottles ( Read more »

  • Oberto Barolo Vigneto Rocche 2000

    Snoothrank:

Theres an obvious pop of wood on the nose that is followed by lovely sour cherry fruit backed up by rich leather and spicy BBQ sauce tones. The wood adds some vanilla here, and a measure of sweetness, but integrates quite well with air. Round in the mouth, with lovely freshness and acidity, this is flush with ripe tannins, precise chalky earth n... Read More

  • Andrea Oberto Barolo 2005

    Snoothrank:

I thought this Barolo would be too tannic because it is fairly young. This was not the case. Color was vivid and the aroma showed some dark fruits and a hint of dried straw. On the palate some dark fruit and a definite zestyness. Nicely layered with several flavors appearing at different stages. A very faint hint of sweetness almost like hard can... Read More

  • Oberto Andrea Barolo Vigneto Rocche 2006

    Snoothrank:

This is jammy but with real fruit, quite ripe, apricot notes, a bit of pastry, maybe some bitter almond paste, coal tar, coal oil, round, fresh, good balance, rustic, clean, cool, nice savory core, some fruit around the edges, nice depth and yet remains rather light, clean, long briary finish, with a nice blood orange tone, Read More
