E & J Gallo

André is an iconic brand of American sparkling wine that has been produced by E. & J. Gallo in California since the mid 1960s. The wine was first created to introduce Americans to affordable sparkling wines in an effort to compete with imported Champagne. In fact, André is one of the wines that gave the Champagne district in France impetus to brand themselves, declaring anything other than sparkling wine made in Champagne is just sparkling wine. That said, André remains a popular alternative, and since its inception is now available in a wide variety of styles including rosé and from dry to sweet.

  • My family moved to California when I was 3 1/2.  The wine industry was ... sparkling (or maybe it was Andre, depends on how flush the parents were at the time) when I poured a second glass at Xmas Eve dinner.  Or maybe it was a third.  Didn't repeat that mistake until college.  By 15, my parents were willing to let me have a say in ordering wi... • Mine started about six years ago when I met my wife.  We played volleyball in an adult league against each other and hit it off at the bar after.  We never drank wine together (only lots of beer) and the subject never came up.  We had been "dating" a few weeks when I invited her over to make us dinner.  She said she would bring a bottle of wine.... It exhibits classic southern Rhone/Provencal notes of kirsch liqueur, roasted herbs, pepper and seaweed. • Chateau Bonnet Bordeaux 2011

A bit raw woody on the nose with attractive if discrete underlying plummy fruit that has some peppery and floral accents to it. Smooth and simple in the mouth with integrated acidity and soft tannins that roll over the tongue with the plummy and violet tinged fruit. Clean with lovely black currant and herbal notes on the moderately long and arom... Read More
