Ancient Coast Wines

Many years ago, a massive inland sea, larger than the great lakes, covered most of Ontario. Over time, the sea receded and left behind a legacy of corals and crustaceans, rich limestone soils, the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario. Ancient Coast Wines are named after the Niagara Escarpment, which was once the coast of this ancient sea. While this sea is long forgotten, it created the natural conditions that make the Niagara Peninsula a great wine growing region. The unique soil composition along with the Niagara Escarpment’s rare microclimate has provided Ontario grape growers with the perfect place for growing vines. Ancient Coast was created in May 2000 as an embodiment and celebration of the geological history of the Niagara Escarpment. Its VQA wines are made from grapes grown exclusively in the rich fertile soils of the Niagara Peninsula. In its short existence, it has come to represent quality wines at an affordable price. – Description from mriskic

  • Interestingly enough, was an offer from our friend Ian Cauble that falls right within this thread's discussion:  Massimo Clerico, Nebbiolo, Lessona DOC Piedmont, Italy 2008 If there is one lesson that is common amongst all the great red wines of the world, it is that nothing can substitute for optimal bottle age. You can decant a young wine t... Read More

  • I’d never heard of Godello until a few years ago but this Spanish white grape variety is now a regular on U.K. wine shelves. What’s more, it’s here to stay; it’s easy to pronounce, the wines taste good and, let’s be honest, we all like to tell our mates about a ‘new’ wine. Godello comes from north-west Spain where the vineyard areas of Bierzo, V... Read More

  • A few days ago I participated in a tasting/pairing event that featured white wines. One of the wines was Chablis, and, while discussing this one, the facilitator stated that it was fermented in steel and had never seen oak.  I asked if that was common for the region and he responded that it was absolutely the case, and was so for all white wines... • Ok, new year and time for a new topic of discussion.  Just yesterday I opened this Pinot Noir from California that initially sounded promising.  First  - it was given to Sandra as a retirement gift so it was free.  Second - a Pinot Noir bottled in St. Helena CA, so it has to be decent, right? and Third - a nice looking label.  Well, this 2014 Me... • Okay, I get to take two quick trips this month.  First, we go to San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach, and Cambria (more or less in that order).  We have one night in Pismo Beach that we can go out for dinner, and we can do a very limited amount of wine tasting because we will have the kids.  So, where do we have dinner in Pismo?  If we eat out in Cambr...
