  • Hard to say what it exactly is, but we've all had moments when wines were really open and "singing" maybe after a quick decant, or hours of air, they just started to open and catch fire. I can think of quite a few wines that stick out in this way, though it seems like a very unpredictable phenomenon. Also, what the heck is going on with wines th... Read More

  • VV, if you liked the Kenneth Volk Malvasia, K&L has it on ... I matched it against an Aldo Conterno basic Barolo a while ago, and it was pretty hard to tell which was the old world and which the new--but AC also scrapes their botte to get a little more oak influence, so there's that.  There's not a ton of Nebbiolo in the US anywhere, something ... • Had a great first full day here in south central California. Started off with a very good breakfast at the ForFriends B&B in Santa Ynez. Too early for any of the tasting rooms to be open so we headed down to Jalama beach for some salt air and scenery. Beautiful beach with some interesting campsites and about a half dozen surfers enjoying some mo... Read More

  • Met up with Foxall last night in Oakland...We had a couple modest '04 ... ... ... Barolo at dinner. The Aldo Conterno was drinking very well, plenty of acid and tannin, with typcial bursts of dark nebbiolo fruit. Also found some mild cinnamon impressions and other spices, however did not find the oak cloying, even though Foxall gave some back... Read More

  • I think OT had a thread in Berserkers all about pictures of vines and vineyards...tried to find one on here but came up short. There was some talk of Limerick Lane (has a nice ring to it) on here recently, I believe Mark has some of the wines. Just now I noticed a nice picture of some Limerick Lane Vineyard rows posted to Facebook by Adam of Sid... Read More

  • That's good to hear Fox...2000 is the most accessible Barolo I've ever ... above. There was also a 2006 Aldo Conterno Cicala that was suspected to have a minor TCA taint or some other flaw that we couldn't pin down. It was also from the K&L sale.Bummer about the Fenocchio though as I still have a few more and really thought I had a great wine. ... Read More

  • Sandrone is modernist, so it's interesting to see what's happening to ... The 2001 is a Cicala from Aldo Conterno, and goes for $325.  Ouch!  But luckily corkage is only $25, and I had this sitting in my basement:Not my photo, sorry.  But that very bottling.  So I read the 2000s are peaking early, like right now, and I didn't really want to mo...
