Alban Vineyards is a wine estate in Edna Valley in San Luis Obispo County, California. Winemaker John Alban is credited with being one of the first Californians to plant the Rhone varietals Viognier, Rousanne, and Syrah in 1989. His successful pioneering efforts led the way for the California Rhone Ranger movement and have since been a significant source for these varietals for other winemakers and his own Alban Vineyards label. He sources Mourvedre and Grenache from Paso Robles where hotter conditions are more conducive to growing those grapes. Apart from white and red single varietal releases and blends, Alban also produces a dessert wine with botrytis grapes called Rotten Luck.– Description from Mimi Kim

Thanks for the mention Outthere! Greatly appreciated.Grenache in the US is certainly on the rise at this time. One must remember that before the mid 1990's, our plant materials were not that good - generally bigger cluster, bigger berry clones that one was able to crop heavily in order to make simple, fruity wines from. That changed with Tablas C... On and off with differing frequency mention is made on these boards of garnacha as a choice for certain palates, and in certain contexts. Most of the mention here is pretty generic, and doesn't get down to any level of detail.Would like to suggest we take up the subject of wines from this grape with better focus. Where is good, who makes the goo... Read More

During Vinexpo 2013 last month – the world’s largest wine fair held once every two years in Merignac just outside Bordeaux – I tasted a fine lineup of Paul Jaboulet wines at the La Lagune stand. The Frey Family, which also owns Chateau La Lagune in the Medoc, acquired Paul Jaboulet Aîné in 2006 and Caroline Frey – whom I interviewed recently – s... Read More
Carnivores and grillers, a few reasons to love Syrah: it’s a fantastic wine for pairing with any roasted meats, especially red meats like beef and lamb, as well as wild game. It is often peppery and sometimes smoky, with a roasted fruit and/or roasted meat flavor profile that makes it a fine accompaniment to anything barbecued or grilled (even, ... Read More
